I'm a bit worried about our Rhubarb at the moment as he has been making this strange hooting noise when he breaths.
It doesn't happen constantly, it tends to be first thing in the morning, there is no discharge from the eyes or nose and his chest sounds clear. I have noticed him sneeze a few times but not enough to make me think it's a URI. If it continues, I will take him to the vet.
Any ideas what it could be?

Just a thought, can guinea pigs get croup?

Well Fredd just got back from the vet with Rhubarb and the vet has no idea what it is. They don't think it's an infection though and as long as he's eating and pooing (which he is) they're not too concerned.
I'd still like to hear if anyone has any ideas what it could be though. Has anyone else had this?

I'm glad to hear that Rhubarb is ok, it's possible that he could have a slight allergy to something.

Thanks for replying :-)
Yes that had crossed my mind too. The only thing I can think of that's different is they have a new bag of hay open. Could that be it? Do Guinea pigs get a hay cough like horses sometimes do? There doesn't appear to be any mold or dampness in it.
We bed them on fleece and they had a cleanout last night so I wonder if it could be the washing liquid. It's not a new brand though and he's always been alright on it before.
Will just have to keep an eye on him I think.

Just got home and he looks like he has a wry neck and I would say that the white side of his face is slightly puffy. He's still m aking the bubbly hooty noise as well.
Back to the vet tomorrow I think!

Thank you! :-)
We decided that it couldn't wait till tomorrow so we took him tonight. The vet says he probably has an ear infection so he's on Baytril for the next week now. If that doesn't work she will do an X-ray but I hope that won't be necessary.
Hopefully he will perk up a bit soon.

I've got my fingers crossed that the Baytril helps and he gets better. Whenever my piggies have had antibiotics it's usually best to give a probiotic as well as antibiotics kill off good bacteria and can cause diarrhoea. I use BioLapis which you can buy online or you could ask your vet for some.

Two of my boars make this "hooting" sound, not really every day, it's very intermittent, I just thought it was another noise they make from time to time. Will keep my ears open, b/c if it seems to get worse, off to the vet we go also.

It may well be just a normal thing for your boys :-) I thought it was respiratory to start with as it sounded a bit like whooping cough but then Rhubarb developed a wry neck a day or two after he started making the noise. If your pigs don't develop any negative symptoms theres probably no need to worry.
