yes it really is hard every time she tries to walk on them she squeals and when u pick her up she squeals and she just sleeps all day unless im feeding her its very hard to watch sadly my partner cant as its his guineapig and there very close and its ovious that she is hurting and not happy she is enjoying her food she doesnt even let you take the syringe away to fill it and she is say suckling again we just have to build up her weight again what the vets have lost . i cant undertstand how she lost that much ?? was they not feeding her at all she is so bad you can feel her bones Piggies have an incredibly fast metabolism & if they're getting a little amount of food they do lose weight incredibly fast & sadly don't regain the same way. I do hope the rodentologist can help; she is a fighter, bless her

On the weight front I had a sow who was attacked by our dog (dog got out guinea pig got out dog caught guinea pig). She ruptured her abdomenal wall and had two operations to save her.
She is still thin but she is perfectly healthy this was in October so I wouldn't worry!

Ok we went to meet the lady from B A O R and we just dont know if her dignoisis is right she seems to think she just has a fungal infection and that she will be fine with a bit of fungal treatment but she could not perscribe anything due to the fact she is not a vet and cant perscribe. now if you look at her foot the right one which is black has a defent line where black seperates from the pink and it goes very deep to us it looks like her foot is seprateing from the black. which means it is gangreen and this lady doesnt know what she is talking about what do you think? ?? also she gave me some childs neorfen for her pain apparently that is great for pain in guineapigs? ? not to sure really who to belive so we thought we would have a third oppionion when looking on the site that tells you approved vet surgerys there is one in grimsby just a hour away from us that has a small mamal surgery which is vet approved we thought we may take her there for a second oppionion what do you think?

I really dont know whats wrong with your piggie, but guineas can get bumble foot which is an infection that can cause death if untreated, you definitely need a vet who specializes in exotics, thats what guineas come under, so look out for that, you need to know exactly whats going on so that it can be treated with the correct drugs, has she had a blood test to rule out infection? it could possibly be fungal cause they are prone to that too and that too can be very dangerous and if untreated could lead to death, I have had one piggie who had swollen back feet, but it was an infection and it was treated with baytril and cleared up, you really need a good vet and finding one unfortunately is very difficult, good luck and please keep us updated on how shes getting on, and fingers crossed!

ranitidine is to stop indigestion in humans, so i would imagine its the same in piggies, often ibuprofen can give tummy ache/indigestion so its used along with ranitidine (childrens nurofen is a form of ibuprofen)

My old boar had a fungal infection in his feet. It was in his toes and it was black and he lost his nails. The vet treated him and he lived for around a year afterwards (he was around 5 at the time).
I think you should probably go to a guinea pig vet, such as the one in Reading. If you google you could probably find the nearest one.
The thing with vets is different ones may give different opinions just as with doctors. So occasionally you do have to look around but you also have to have trust in your vet.
Do her feet smell? If it was fungal or gangrene then they are likely to smell.

ok, as i always say if you want something done do it yourself. i spent 7 hours the other night finding some info on anti inflammatorys and treatments that would be good for her. i took her to five vets now and two rescues and no one has helped so we decided to try for ourselves with a bit of hard work and it seems to be paying off. ok what we are doing .......... we found out the best way to treat bumblefoot is GRISEOFULVIN. which know one has told us which is also an anti inflammatory. so we are giving her that now twice daily she has been on it two days the dose is 0.5 ml every day twice a day. also we are bathing her feet three times a day in hibi scrub and she is having baytril and nurofen for pain relif and antibiotics. also im giving her metone for her weight loss and mukka honey. and they are doing wonders she seems to be spending most the times with her mouth round a syringe and in baths but it looks to be working a little. we gave her the bath today and the black bits are starting to fall off and it is red and pink underneath and is saw for her to walk on but it wasnt gangreen at all she is not going to loose her feet this scab type dead flesh that is all over her right foot is falling off and i think she is going to be ok.

It may be beneficial to cover her feet but i can't say for sure, i wish i could. I have seen piggies with feet bandaged (the self sticking bandages so they can't nibble them off) & they do cope fine.

I'm not sure are you better to bandage it to keep it clean or to let the air at it to dry it out. If you bandage it, the wound will stay moist.
As Niki says, it's a good sign that the flesh underneath is red, it means it's healthy.

yes that is what we thought it would be moist so to let it dry out well her left foot is all better the right is very red and inflamed but no black at all so atleast her left one is better one foot left.

Its a good sign that its red, its showing that all the infection is going or prob already gone, it just needs to heal now, I would let the air get to it and not bandage it up, like Orliath said it would stay moist and prob take longer to heal, just keep keeping it clean and she should be ok, fingers crossed.

Glad to hear she's doing so well. It just goes to show that with care and attention and lots of love, piggies can be made well again if people are willing to try!

I am so sorry you're having to go through this! You shouldn't feel bad you were following the vets advice and they should know better. It's good that she is eating and enjoying the food you are syringe feeding her I take that as a good sign. I hope she recovers! Animals are resilient and adaptable who knows how she might be able to cope with her disability! She might surprise us all!
