I am very nervous...PopTart gets neutered tomorrow. They said I could bring him in tonight or tomorrow morning, but I chose tomorrow to keep his stress level down, although he seems pretty adaptable. No food after 10 pm tonight, then into the vets tomorrow at 7am before I drop off my son at school and I head to work. I hope so much that everything goes well. I'll probably keep him in the larger C&C cage where I have fleece, since I'm using pine shavings in the smaller cage.
Keep him in your thoughts!

Good luck! Seems strange that they would keep him off food though, my vet asked me to take food in with me, because piggies can't vomit there's not much need to keep them off food, but then different vets have different views.
Anyway I'm sure everything will go well. I kept sooty in a smaller cage when he was neutered to so he was more confined and less likely to hurt himself, but I'm sure he will be fine :-)
Let us know how he gets on!

I could put him the smaller cage. Did you keep him on pine shavings or something else?

I kept him on fleece light coloured just so I could see if there was and bleeding or pus. I'm sure he will be fine in a bigger cage just make sure there's nothing he can jump on or catch his wounds on and it will be fine, he probably won't move around much at all for a day or so, sooty just sat in a corner for the first day I brought him home, the vet gave me pain killers for him which helped to get him moving again.
Hope that's helped!
He will be in my thoughts! But I'm sure everything will go perfectly! I panicked a lot with sooty over nothing and now he's the best piggie ever, he will give me kisses and everything haha
Good luck!

Thanks everyone! I'll probably take his PVC pipe out, and put in the pigloo. He has a cuddle cup already in there, and nothing else right now except for hay that could be a problem or catch on him. My son is upset; he was hoping for baby piggies. However, we can't rule that out yet with Scout, since they were together after she gave birth. He might get his wish after all! At least this way, if she has girl pups, we're still good.

Took him in this morning. Happened to notice his one ear was a bit crusty, so vet is checking on that as well when he'll be asleep. They are keeping him overnight tonight, so I have to bring in some of his favorite foods this afternoon. That way they can keep an eye on him (it's a 24 hr vet clinic). They're also going to trim his nails, thank goodness, as he's our biter Thanks for all the well-wishes, I'll keep you up-to-date!

Im sure he will be just fine. I would suggest taking out all pigloos ect until hes healed. He wont mind a pile of hay to sleep/eat.
Let us know how he gets on

He's home! The vet said it went very well, so we were able to take him home this afternoon instead of them keeping him another night. He had eaten a little at the vet's, and as soon as he was back in his cage he started right in on his pellets. He's also eaten some lettuce and a bit of carrot, and almost all of his red bell pepper. Kayleigh, I took your advice and moved out the pigloo and PVC tunnel, so he only has hay, his food dish, and a fleece cuddle cup. He's on fleece bedding as well. As soon as I took out the pigloo, he went right back to eating pellets. The vet also checked out PopTart's crusty ear, and feels it's ringworm. He says it should clear up on it's own, but if no change in two weeks to call back and he'll prescribe an antifungal; the most important part is to wash our hands after handling him, and to keep him from getting into contact with other pets. Considering he's separated from Scout for 6 weeks anyway, that shouldn't be a problem. I'm so glad it went well. They even trimmed his nails (Yay!) Thanks all!

Oh, and the vet also gave me three filled syringes of pain meds for the next three days, and some Critical Care fine-grind recovery food that can be fed by syringe. It's made by Oxbow, so I felt good about that. Probably won't need it this time, but good to have on hand!

He really seems like his old self. Ate great last night and this morning, took his medicine like a trooper. Aside from not popcorning and sprinting that is lol

That's good, fingers crossed for him! Critical Care is a great boost for piggies that aren't eating too well, but it's only available from vets, not petshops so it can be hard to track down. It'll do him the world of good. I also think it's strange that he was kept off his food before the op. I've had my piggies go under sedation three times and each time was told to keep feeding them

Yeah, it was even more confusing when I took him in that morning and they asked if he'd been fed, and were a bit concerned that he hadn't been. The vet tech told me that they usually require feeding beforehand, such as with rabbits. I mentioned that the person on the phone when I made the appt told me no food after 10. Thank goodness it worked out anyway.
Orlaith, do you think I should give him some of the Critical Care in addition to his food? He ate about pretty much his normal amount last night and this morning. Can I use the syringe I was given for his pain meds once it's empty? The directions on the package seem a bit confusing.

So glad it went well. I must say though, ringworm (fungal) will not clear up without any help. you must apply a cream to it, i use daktarin athletes foot cream you can also use lamisil and the other brands. Just apply the cream to his ear for the next week or two and it should improve.
If hes eating then theres no need for critical care formula. My neut boars were right as rain and munching on veggies the days after.
Just give him a few days peace and he will be back to normal.
