Hi there...I've just got back from the vet. Charlie's eyes were discharging yellowish stuff this afternoon, so I was really worried ! Eamonn, our vet , instilled a special dye, and then looked into Charlie's eyes. I was fascinated, as I was clearly able to see a scratch on the cornea of his right eye. I was so upset too though, cos I try so hard to make sure that my boys never get any where near aything that could hurt them ! Anyway, Eamonn has given me a 7day course of Fucithalmic drops for Charlie. He was going to use Gentamycin, but he says that in his experience, it "bounces" off the eye and doesn't really go in... Just hope my bonny boy will be ok...Dawn, I found your post about eyes very helpful - thks ! I was not aware of many of the normal things cavy eyes do !...Irene

Ray : Thanks for the get well wishes for Charlie. He's a bit subdued today...Gobbling all his treats - carrots, lettuce,celery...but not eating his grains...Just hope he's himself soon. Dawn : Yes, we are very lucky...Eamonn is a lovely person and a great vet ! He has a passion for rodents, and piggies are his favourites.

Hi evryone..Just an update : Charlie's eye is looking much better, thank God ! Just a tip I picked up from our vet, Eamonn : When instilling the eye drops, gently pull the eyelid up to expose the cornea, then instill the drop. If it lands next to the eye for example, gently close the eyelids, and very gently massage them. This usually works at getting the drops in. Has worked perfectly for Charlie...Especially with the Fucithalmic drops, cos they liquify on contact with the mucous membranes of he eye...Hope this makes sense !! Irene

Hi everyone...Am so upset...Charlie seems to be keeping his right eye closed most of the time. Its not discharging, but seems to bother him..Other than that, he's his happy self, eating well, popcorning etc..I rang Eamonn ( our vet ), and he suggested that I discontinue Charlie's eye drops ( he's had 7 days ), and keep a watch on him over the week-end. Eamonn says that usually over 2 to 3 days, after stopping meds, the eye will open again, and gradually return to normal. But if not, I must bring Charlie over to him first thing on Monday....I'm so worried !!!
