Ok so on the advice of LuvCats I have made a new thread.
Doris has conjunctivitis and now an upper respiratory infection (uri) so is on baytril. Her eyes are starting to clear up but her sneezing is getting worse.
Betty on the other hand has had a URI ever since we got her 4 weeks ago and I have been backwards and forwards with her ever since to the vets. Went today and the vet has put her back on Baytril but a higher dose, given us some powder to put on her food to get rid of the mucus and she has to go back to the vets every 2 days now to have an injection of a different anti biotic but I don't know what it is.
I really don't know what to do with them both, they are very poorly piggies. Poor girls. Grrrr I hate pets at home for this. Thank god they are paying the vets bills... I imagine I would have spent over 200 quid on fees alone over the last 4 weeks.
I want to keep both Doris and Betty off woodshavings and hay as a bedding because I think its affecting their breathing - they both have very runny noses Betty more so than Doris though. I have a Savic Nero 4 cage for Betty and a 3 for Doris until they can move in together - does anyone know what other bedding I can try in these cages and if fleece how can I attach it? I have tried recycled paper but they eat it, towels but they eat it and move it out of the way and pee and poop under it (it lasted a whole 15 mins before I had to take it out ) Newspaper, again they eat it,
Seriously running out of ideas and need some advice. Sorry for the long post.

hey
i have just started to use easi bed, its not dusty at all as my guinea nina was suffering a little because of the other bedding. as it made her eyes water. i was just wondering where abouts u live? its just vets arent really specialist in guinea pigs and a rodentologist would be better. maybe other members might be able to help if your not near me? ur doin all you can. they are very lucky guineas.

Awww... poor girls Have you tried vet bed? I used to use it in my C&C it can be clipped down with bulldog clips so that the piggies cant get under it. I used to put layers of newspaper under to soak up the pee and it worked great for me. You will need at least two pieces one to have inthe cage and one to wash because you will need to change it every other day. I have some pieces left that are still in very good condition if you would like some to try, I don't want much for it just a few quid It can be expensive to buy new but I thought it was worth the investment.

I have seen vet bed in P@H but it looks really fleecy - will my gps not eat it? I dont have my washing machine on that often either and in my flat it takes a minimum of 2 days to dry clothes. Thanks for the offer though Dawn, I am not well at the moment but I will keep it in mind and when feeling better may nip over

You can use megazorb, easibed, fleece, which will also need washing but is cheaper than vetbed. Both vetbed & fleece do dry quickly & if you use newspaper underneath you can throw this away. I don't secure my fleece with anything & my piggies don't burrow but if you buy fleece big enough you could trap it under the cage lid Also if the baytril doesn't start working ask your vet about septrin, i hope they start to improve soon

i use fleece, and my boys burrowed underneath, so when i clean them out i simply lift the lid off and trap the fleece under the lid, so they cant get underneath. i hope your pigs start to improve soon.

hey
where does your guinea pig live? inside or out? its just a damp time of year and im sure thats not helping.
we used to have that problem with clothes dryin and now we have brought a dehumidifier and it almost dries them over night which is good for your health and the guineas if they live inside.
i think its a long time for your guinea to be ill, has the vet looked to see whether the guinea has mites or parasites as that can really affect there health, as that is what my archie died from.
i take my guineas to see vedra at Cambridge Cavy trust but that is miles away from you. You mayb able to ring Vedra ( text her first) and she can offer some advice over the phone, even if your not a member.
hope things improve

Both piggies live inside and in the warmest room in the flat. they live in the living room its the least damp place too if we put clothes to dry in the living room they are done over night but theres just no room what with 2 gp cages, a pc, 2 sofas, a hamster cage and a bike! I have put blankets around both the gps cages so that it minimises any draughts. Going back to the vets in an hour for Betty's next injection I havent noticed any sort of skin problem but I will ask tonight.

vets just arent very knowledgable about guineas which is sad, the guinea wont neccessarily have a skin problem if they have parasites as archie didnt, bless him. eggs can be seen apparently and lookin under a microscope they are very visable. good luck. keep us updated. tell me about lack of space. i think i need a bigger house! doris and betty are very lucky to have you! :-)

Back from the vets and shes had her injection, she squeeled so loudly and is out of it now bless her. I feel really annoyed with the vets though, everytime we go we see someone different, todays didnt seem to give 2 hoots about her, literally jabbed her and tried sending us on our way. I have the flu at the moment and so does my bf so even driving down to the vets every couple of days is taking it out of us but it would be worth it to get our animals well..... The vet we saw on Sunday said she would need 3 or 4 injections, this vet says only 2. No one seems to know whats going on and im so upset. I just want my girls well

No real change I am afraid. I cleaned her cage out today and this time put a thick layer of timothy hay for her to lie on on top of the newspaper. Its about the only thing I havent tried other than the fleece. I think the injection really took it out of her yesterday shes not back to her self yet. Doris on the other hand its hard to tell cos we have had her a week and a half and we arent too sure what is considered normal for her yet lol. Shes just been out for a cuddle, she burried herself in a towel and fell asleep. I posted pics of the pair in the pigtures section Thank you so much for taking an interest in my piggies, it means so much to me

We are due back to the vets with doris on saturday. I am going to ask for a print out of all the treatment the girls have had over the last month and then if they do give it me use this to ring a cavy savy vet with and ask them if this is appropriate treatment or if i just take them at least they have something to see how they were treated before they came to their care. do you think they will give me a print out? its all on their computer system so shouldnt be too hard?

They should give it to you, no questions asked. It's your information so you should be able to get access to it. If they quibble tell them they're in breach of the Data Protection Act!

Thats good then, because it will be far easier to see what theyve been given rather than me trying to rack my memory of the 4 times weve been every bloomin week!

An allergy is possible but the thing is I am unsure what they might be allergic to and the fact that both piggies are sneezing is worrying. Like I have said in previous posts I have tried every type of bedding and nothing made any difference plus when they are taken off the Baytril they get really runny noses rather than just the sneezes. Its all a bit worrying but I have my fingers crossed that we see a vet that knows what they are doing because I am ready for going mad at them if I get another one that doesnt care about their treatment or thinks less about them because they arent a cat or a dog. Grrrrr deffinately going to ask for the list of treatments and if they do anything that makes me think they arent giving the pigs their best care they are being checked in with a vet that Dawn recommened to me that is cavy savy and I will have to pay for their treatment. Sorry for ranting but I have just had it with the treatment at companion care and their lack of knowledge and them just keep palming me off saying it can take a long time for URIs to clear up... should not be taking this long by what everyone on gp forums have been telling me! x
edit: forgot to mention both pigs are now living together as they both have the same illness anyway and they seem very happy with each others company.. so much so that their eating has increased and they are eating me out of house and home! I am going to have 2 very porkie piggies soon lol x

Glad you put them back together stress can make pigs ill and its not worth it when they have a URI anyway . Hope you get to the bottom of it x . I am sure if it was just an allergy there would be no runny noses i think its an infection

Hello, back from the vets. They were weighed and checked over and the vet said that there doesnt seem to be an infection anymore and to take them off the baytril - they said this last time however and their noses went runny again! So now I am just keeping an eye on them and if they get snuffly again they are going straight to the cavy savy vet Dawn told me about. They seem fine though, their chests are clear, they run around and they eat A LOT lol. x

I have been a bit worried about mine. She's off the baytril and in with all the others but is sneezing all the time. She doesn't seem unwell and my hubby thinks she must just be sneezy. Maybe it's the hay?
Are yours still sneezing Clarify? Did you get to the bottom of it?
