Hi all, I would like your opinion on Tia's small bald patch. I noticed it this morning and i think it may be mites ( i cant visibly see anything although im aware some mites are microscopic) Iv never seen mites in guinea pigs so i just want your opinions before i whisk her away to the vets. Its a small patch on her back (just within nibbling range) iv noticed her scratching and nibbling at it. Its also slightly red and theres flakes of skin present. All my girls have been bathed in mite/flea shampoo recently so im unsure if it is actually mites. Iv seperated her from my other two just until im sure what it is. I took these pictures about ten minutes ago. What do you think? Thanks in advance

I wonder if it could be the start of mites if it seems to be itchy and there are flakes of skin. You dont need to spend loads that the vet just get some Beaphar spot on and treat everyone that will sort it.

could be mites or fungal but go with what dawn has said to use first and if that treatment fails then you could try something to deal with fungal

i can highly recommend gorgeous guineas' coconeem melt and manuka & neem shampoo if the spot on doesn't work you decide it's fungal.

I applied the spot on treatment on the girls yesterday evening after washing all their bedding etc. Everything seems ok, although im unsure what was the cause of the mites (if that is what it is) If its the hay then that means Simba (rabbit) may have it too, I treated him with the spot on also just to be safe. Tia still seems the worst, scratching and nibbling at her fur. Im wondering if i should seperate her from the other two as a precaution...but then i was thinking she has been with them since i got her so if she has something they are most likely to have it also. Sorry for rambling. I just want to get to the bottom of this.
Thank you for the shampoo idea. Im hoping the spot on will treat whatever is causing this.

i wouldnt seperate any pigs because stress can make the mites worse , just treat them all

I thought that along side whatever she has they will all have no doubt. They seem to be getting back to normal. still a bit itchy but they are back to wolfing down their veggies. Fingers crossed once i apply the final spot on (friday) that will be the end of it. Thanks everyone

Ok iv just given everyone a check over and both Pip and Squeak seem to be fine, no bald flaky patches. They have the odd scratch but thats to be expected if they do indeed have mites. But Tia has now got a bloody patch on her back, i noticed this right away as she is white. This could be due to the fact that its itchy and she must be scratching/nibbling at it a fair bit. I could be overworrying here but ill post a picture anyway just to show you what im meaning. Am i worrying over nothing or could it be something else?? As you can see on the picture the initial bald patch is still there, but this red patch is a new itchy zone.

Just a final update to say that my trio are now mite free!! They are all back to normal, Tia has her fur back where she had scratched it off and the others arent itchy. Thankfully the spot on treatment has worked. No injections for my three
