One of our guinea pigs passed yesterday. She was only 4 months old and I'm not sure what happened. She was acting fine. I was cleaning out the cage so my kids were holding them. My son screamed that Maggie, the pig that passed, was coughing and acting funny. She coughed a few times and a white substance came out of her bathroom area (the number 2 exit) and then she passed. It was very sudden. She had no respiratory symptoms and was other wise fine in the days before and even when I took her out of the cage. She was eating fine and using the bathroom, I think, and her activity level was fine. Our other guinea seems perfectly healthy, except she is confused and missing her friend now. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? We want to get another guinea so the remaining one isn't lonely but I don't want to do that until I make sure that this was not contagious. I also want to know what happened so if it something we did/did not do, it can be prevented in other pigs in the future. This was just so upsetting.

She could have had an infection and it could have been puss that she was passing. I know dogs have pyometra which is an infection of the uterus and they pass puss and can die very quickly with that, so I am wonderous if she had something along those lines. This is just a thought as like Dawn I have never heard of that happening before.
It may be worth ringing Vedra at the Cambridge Cavy trust as she specialises in small animals and perhaps she may be able to throw some light on it for you. Do let us all know if you find out what happened.
