Two days ago, I noticed that Winnie wasn't acting like her usual self. She typically is VERY vocal - wheeking and gnawing on the rungs, asking for treats whenever I'm nearby. But I noticed that she was NOT talking to me, and staying tucked in her tunnel.
Last night when I picked her up before going to bed, I could hear that she is wheezing (sounds like me, during an Asthma attack) and her voice (when she wheeked at me) sounded very hoarse/rattly.
She doesn't have any other symptoms from what I can tell. No discharge, no gunky eyes, no sneezing... just lethargic, wheezing, and hoarse.
From what I've read on this forum, Vick's might help?? I'm hesitant to use it before getting input from you ladies (are there any men here?) as I worry that perhaps I'm misreading her symptoms and/or misunderstanding the treatment. Are you folks talking about Vick's VaporRub... the kind humans use for a stuffy nose? It's mentholyptus or something??
I hope someone can offer advice quickly. I'm so worried about my sweet Winnie!

To be honest, anything to do with respiration I'd take seriously and get the vets opinion. Better safe than sorry.

I had something similar with one of my piggies this week. Not wheezing but very "off" if you know what I mean, just not himself. So I took him to the vet this morning and it turns out his breathing is very raspy because he has a little chest infection and that's why he was in such a bad mood.
One of my other pigs was crackling when he was breathing last week and he also had an early stage chest infection. So our vet prescribed a course of baytril for both of them.
I have heard of using vicks vaporub to help clear up wheezy piggies but I've never done it myself. Since my vet is really good with piggies and not very expensive, I prefer to bring them in to get checked out, just to be on the safe side.

He needs some Baytril for this as soon as possible, so he needs to go to the vet. You can use vicks vapour rub on his nost and also Sudafed 0.2ml twice daily will also help him. If you do give him antibiotics please remember to ask you vet for some avi=pro+ as well which will put the flora and forna back into the gut, otherwise he wil get diorrhoea from the Baytril and you could lose him. Also remember to give him avi-pro+ for at least a week after the antibiotics have finished as he is likely to get diorrhoea afterwards as well, until the flora and forna has built up in the gut.
We have just had a boar with a chest infection, but after the above treatrment he is now perfectly ok.

I have used Vicks vaporub successfully before (just a tiny bit above the nose), but I would definitely get a vet to check Winnie out and follow delukem's advice. Hope Winnie gets better soon! x
