Xander has started crackling again for the third time in about five or six weeks. Every breath has a little crackle noise and when I listen to his chest there's a little wheeze as well. He's in flying form, still eating and all, but when I take him out he just snuggles into my chest whereas normally he's full of beans and wants to explore. He has already had two courses of baytril which cleared it up for a week each time but then the same thing happened again.
We went to the emergency vet last night with him because the crackling was so much worse than normal and lasted longer. The vet there said that she thought he had allergic bronchitis, so a sort of asthma triggered by something in his environment. The only thing we've changed lately is the hay, since we haven't been able to buy their normal brand and our regular petshop have been having problems ordering it in (some delay with the wholesaler), so this is probably it. Our own vet mentioned this as well and thought this might be something to do with it. I'm doing my best to shake it out and get rid of as much dust as I can.
Xander has always been more prone to being chesty than the other piggies so I'm not surprised he's the one to be affected, but he can't stay on baytril forever, it'll only make him sick. The emergency vet said we should discuss getting him an inhaler with our regular vet. Has anyone ever heard of this for a piggy? Or can anyone offer any advice? He's my special little man and I'm so scared of losing him. I don't want to be always waiting for the next time he gets sick.
Thanks!
EDIT: Forgot to mention, just for clarity's sake, that our piggies are all on fleece (and we've always used the same detergent) so there's so shavings or anything like that.
