I have four guinea pigs, two 4 year olds and two 1 year olds. Last night I heard them squeaking extremely loudly so I went down to see them in their outside hutch . I found one of my adult guinea pigs had a very bad cut on one side of her nose, like her nostril had been ripped, and also her ear looked as if it had been chewed and was bleeding quite a bit. I took her in the house then went back to check on the other 3 guineas. When I opened the door to their sleeping area a big wild rat ran out. Yesterday afternoon I had opened their door so they pigs could get out and run round the run (their hutch is inside a big run) so maybe the rat got in then and didn't come out when I locked them away.
This morning when it was light I went to see the remaining 3 pigs and the hutch looked horrible, blood was splattered on the walls. The small guineas were in a state of shock and squeaked so loudly when I tried to pick them up. I checked them over and they were OK, one had a nick on her ear but that was all. The other adult pig had cuts on her back and tiny ones by her eye and mouth.
I have seen these rats before and they aren't yucky and scabby, they look in good condition, but their obviously wild and live in the bush behind the guinea run. I have made an appointment with the vet but not until later, will their cuts become infected? I dabbed at the adults nose a bit and cleaned her ear, should I put some antiseptic cream on it??

Wow, sorry to hear about that. I would have never thought that a rat would attack piggies like that. I hope they are all healed and are doing better today. And I hope you found a way to keep the rats out.

i knopw it sounds obvious but you mustn't leave them in there while ever the rat can get back in. They must be terrified the poor things. I hope you got on ok at the vets. It would definitely be a good idea to keep the wounds clean.
