hey all
tricksy has been making a weird noise, guess similar to what a few of you have described, kinda a whooping horse sort of noise. but its not constant, only once a week or so. and she will make it until she coughs and then it is gone. she has no symptoms of a respiratory infection, she is eating and drinking and pooing fine, still as active as ever.
i cant decide if its just some thing stuck like hay and she coughs it away and is fine or if its a respiratory infection.
what do you guys think?
im in two minds cause i want her to be ok but every time i go to the vets i know more than they do. so ill take her for them to check her breathing and give her antibiotics but i dont want them messing with her.

If she has no other symptoms I would say that she sounds normal. I think, just like us, that they get things caught in their throats and have to cough it up (kinda like when you have a tickle in your throat, you cough). Just listen to her belly, if you hear a clicking noise when she breathes then that is an indicator of a respiratory infection.

I had a piggie that did that too. It sounds like it was the same scenario. She turned out fine. Never had any real problems, just the noises. I agree with jcdscaviary, its probably just something that needs coughing up. I wouldn't worry too much, but if you want to be 100% sure I would take her to a qualified exotic animal veterinarian for an answer. Good luck. =)

My Brown Sugar does that also. Out of all 3 guinea pigs, he's the only one that does it.
I always thought he was eating his hay too fast, or something. He has no other symptoms, and he's doing just fine.
I've always kept a close eye on it though, in case it ever got worse. But it never did.
