I just bought this guinea pig 5 days ago and am new to the species. The very next day after bringing him home, his eye was crusty in the morning. The next day, he started sneezing a lot. The day after that his nose started running and today his eye was completely closed over with goo. I wiped it with a warm wet washcloth and he was able to open it and it kinda looks milky inside. I took him back to the pet store today and they told me that it was a vitamin deficiency. They had me buy an antibiotic for birds but advised me several times not to give him too much or I could kill him! I haven't given him any of this medicine because I'm too scared. I have gotten so attached to this little guy. Does anyone have any clue what it could be or what I could do to help him? He is six weeks old. He has the recycled soft bedding stuff (no cedar). He eats a pellet diet. SO far, since he has not been well, I have not given him anything other than regular food. Should I be giving him a vitamin? Help!!

if he is sneezing it could indicate a respiritory infection, i wouldnt use an over the counter remedy for this, your piggy should really see a good cavy vet and they can give him some anti-biotics to clear it up. xx

I totally agree, I wouldnt use the medicine they got you to buy, go see a vet.
Don't feel bad though, the exact same thing happened to me, the day after I got them they had similar symptoms to yours. They vet gave me Baytril antibiotics, and some stuff to put in their eyes aswell. One cleared up well but sadly the other diddn't survive.
Pet shops are bad!

I would see if your petshop will cover the veterinary expenses. Even if it was a vitamin deficiency, I don't think your pig would be having such a reaction in only a day.
Apart from your pig's pellets, your pig should be getting unlimited hay and fresh vegetables every day. If he's getting these things then he shouldn't need any supplements.

I agree you should take him to vet as soon as possible, repiratory problems can cause a piggie to go down hill extremely fast a good antibiotic should do the trick just make sure the vet does not give him penicillin..it is deadly to guineas....

I am having problems with my four guinea pigs, they have been on two different types of anti biotics, the first one was pink the newer one is zithromax. They seemed to get better and now they just seem to click when they are breathing, not so much sneezing and their noses are fine. They seem to be acting fine but I just don't want them to die like the first two we had that had some kind of fungal ear infection they got from the pet shop which claimed to have taken them to the vets but they died within a week of going back there. Is there something I can give the pigs other than vicks on their cage or lots of fresh food?
