Hi, I am new to owning two cavies. I got them for free through a friend, mostly for my two little girls! I was told they were from a pet store, they are both males, and are quite young. They aren't too much bigger than my hand. They are Abyssinian and totally adorable!!! Shortly after having them home, Peanut the albino cavy's eye was partly closed and swollen. I took them to the vet the next day, and she prescribed an antibiotic drop for it. It has been about a week, and a small improvement has been made, but not much. Plus I have been noticing some crusty's on his nose, and lots of sneezing! I am very worried that it could be an URI. Although his appettite and behaviour are still totally normal. More bad news, Pistachio, the other cavy, his eye is now doing the same I started the drops on him as well.... I have been researching constantly on the web for info. I'm thinking its an URI. I have done evertyhing that is recommended as far as food, bedding, hay, ect... any advice on what to do?? I hope I haven't aided in this somehow!!! I am very worried!! Thanks, P&P's mom

It does sound like it could be something like the sniffles or something more serious. I would suggest another trip to the vets. What bedding are the piggies being kept on? Are they indoor pigs or outdoor pigs?

Yes I have had them at the vets again, and she prescribed them tetracycline, for their eyes. Their bedding is called Boxo, its 100% recycled refuse form a cardboard making facility. God, I hope this is okay. It reads that it is heat treated and made perfectly safe for pets. I thought I would try this, because I read that even alpine shavings weren't the best. (this what I was originally using). Its quite soft and fluffy. The websites I have been looking at are Amercian and they reccommend brands of bedding that are not in Cananda. So I'm not sure what kind of bedding to buy. Thank you for any advice. Tami

It may be worth taking the pigs off the loose bedding just to rule out an allergy to the boxo. Try housing them on newspaper until their medication is up and there eyes are healed. You will need to change the paper on a daily basis but i think its easy to come across..
I keep all my groups on woodshavings as i havent had any issues with this. Its cheaper to buy and easy to come across. I have kept my pigs on megazorb aswell, this is a fantastic loose bedding but it can be costly with my herd hehe. Im not sure if you can get it in Canada though.
I would love to see pigtures of your abys.
