Morning everyone Now that my piggies are all home and settled I can start this thread, Im working on satin himalayans, this will take a good year or 2 but its begun so im pleased. This will take time and alot of thought out pairing, Using ivory isnt ideal as the yellow tinge will be hard to breed out. But this was my only option as i cannot for the life of me locate a black satin. Whatever the outcome i shall be pleased as i love the ivory and the himis. So no love lost here. Twirl my black pointed himi sow has been paired to Caramac my ivory satin boar. Twirl is inpig and due from now!! Heres a couple of shots of both pigs to give you an idea of them. Twirl - She doesnt have the best ears on her, but her points are all nice and dark and she has a pretty good clean coat throughout. Caramac - Ivory satin boar, good ears on this pig and a nice overall body so should compliment Twirl well. ( i hope ) Ill keep this thread updated as best as i can. Fingers crossed all goes well and i should get some lovely carrier pigs (maybe a sneaky satin) but we shall see. Kayleigh

I wish I lived by you! I never knew about himis until this forum, and I would love to find a breeder here.

I'd say you'll get lovely pups from them. What about Twirl's ears isn't show quality? There are no piggy shows in Ireland so I'm interested to know about the standards

Orlaith : ears are meant to be nice big flat even shaped. They should sit down the side of the face.not sticky up like hers. Himis are renowned for having dodgy ears but thankfully they are only 5points in a show.
Sooty has the best himi ears of all my himis. And thankfully caramacs ears are nice.
No pups yet but i can feel them rolling and kicking about. Grinding teeth also. So pups should be very soon!!

I'm really excited to see the pups!
How is the satin gene passed? Do both parents need to be either satins or satin carriers for it to be visible?

Orlaith :
Satin Carriers are Guinea Pigs that have normal coat but are carrying the Satin within their genes that will be passed on to their offsprings. When breeding a Satin Guinea Pig with a normal coated Guinea Pig, the pups will have 100% Satin genes.
This would be classed as a Satin Carrier.
When breeding Satin & Satin Carrier there is a 50% chance of getting Satins and 50% of getting Carriers. When breeding a Satin Carrier with another Satin Carrier there is a 25% chance of getting Satins and 75% of getting Satin Carriers. Satin is a recessive gene so from this litter i will get carriers and will need to breed a carrier with a satin to get a chance of satin pups. Its a very long breeding process and one which will take me a while. Im hoping to get a black satin to help stamp out the yellow tint from the ivory eventually, but for now starting from scratch, and researching all the way to keep on track.

Well today was the day! Twirl has delivered 4 gorgeous pups. I found them this morning just before leaving for work! Their weights are 95g, 99g, 101g & 105g so pretty good for a litter of 4. Looks like i have 3 boars and 1 sow but will check again in a few days, once they have settled down. Kinder hope 1 of my lookalike boars is a sow! But we shall see haha. Very pleased with them, Twirl is being a fantastic mum too!!
