My guinea pigs eye had glaucoma in it. She went for surgery 4 days ago to have the eye removed. As the vet did the surgery she found a large infected abcess behind the eye which caused the glaucoma. The abcess was along her cheek. The vet said she think she got all of the abcess out. As she was doing the surgery she notice her teeth were sharp and jagged. She says this caused the abcess. I did notice she was chewing funny a day before the surgery (I hadnt noticed it before). She looks at food and will back off as if it is sour, or she will sometimes as if the food is really sour (it doesnt happen all the time) She makes a funny face. She made it out of surgery (thank goodness) But i am worried about the chewing issue now. Could this be she still has some sores in her mouth ? It is her right side of the mouth she chews funny on, which is where the right eye and the abcess was infected. Her teeth were shaved down, could it just feel wierd? I am hoping she just still has sores in her mouth that will heal, and it is not the tooth itself. Any info would be appreciated. The first day I brought her home after surgery she kept grinding her teeth, which she sometimes still does, but the vet said she would do that. I go back in a couple of weeks. So I will bring this up with my vet. She is eating though.

Aslong as she is eating and drinking thats all good. She will feel very weird if she had uneven teeth. Aslong as they have been sorted it should be just fine
The important thing is she continues to eat and drink!

Okay thank you. I am just worried the abscess is under the tooth. It could just be sores in her mouth. She does it when she goes to eat something like cucumber. I guess it could be when we have a sore in a our mouth and we eat something sour, it wouldnt be nice. I am also have issues with dominance issues. Munchkin has been seperated for a bit, but had daily visits with the others, she's getting stronger to be bossy back, but the others are very pushy, especially the youngest. I also have to be really careful because they are very interested in where the stitches are. So I sort of have to jump in when they go near them which kind of disrupts them. Munchkin is usually boss piggy, so I think I am going to have issues there. Once the stitches are gone and she's feeling stronger, hopefully she can put them in there place. She is moaning evertytime the other come near her and disrupt her. She does nudge them though. Just worried about those stitches. Yesterday I noticed her lifting the other chins up and today I thinkthe youngest tried to mount her but munchkin just moaned and ran off. When she's with me she's very happy, walking around interested in everything. She just gets a little frustrated with the other piggies.

It may be worth housing her next to the others so she can heal in peace. It also allows you to see how much shes eating/drinking.

She is, she gets there cage and the others are in the guinea pig run for a while until they can all be put back in the cage together. Another problem well not really, is her noisy tummy. Before and after surgery she probably had to much broccoli causing popping noises coming from her tummy. She is just eating hay and her pellets now for the next few days, she pooping and peeing normally. So not gut problems. I feel a bit bad, like I shouldn't have let her eat all that brocolli but after surgery but it was what she wanted. She eats her pellets and everything else so that should sort it out. I also just weighed her, she is 2 lbs and 1.4 oz. She weighs the least of my guinea pigs, but I heard this is still good. No broccoli or yogurt treats for the next few days, then I will them to her moderately ;p

Ohhh.... So tonight I had her out, she was walking around, squeaking for food and eating. when I picked her up I though I could smell the infection smell of the pus when her eye and the abcess was infected before the removal. When I went to take her down for bed time, I let her meet with the others, making sure they didnt touch the stitches. They didnt, but when I picked her up the lower corner has oozed out white pus, it was more watery pus, not so clogged up. It oozed out of the bottom corner where the stitches had started to disolve. I am going to call the vet tomorrow to see if this is okay, but I am just all worried again. It was a tear drop sized amount of pus, it did have a bad smell to it There had been no more that has oozed out since though. Will see what happens in the morning.

It was more of white colour, when i cleaned it carefully off with a tiny cotton bud (making sure i didnt move the stitches and everything too much) it came off onto the cotton bud as a yellowy colour.

Pus should be cleanded away as best as possible. Do not feed yoghurt treats etc they arent good for pigs at all.
Veggies are all good so feed them. Brocolli is fine, mine get it often and iv never had issues. Aslong as a single veg isnt overfed its fine. (Overfed as in offered all day everyday)
Keep the wound clean and her happy and im sure she will recover in no time.

Is your piggy on any sort of antibiotics post-surgery? If not then ask your vet if this is necessary. My pigs have always been prescribed an antibiotic after surgery just as a precaution.
Keep the wound as clean as you can. Warm water and cotton wool should be good enough.
As for her eating, sometimes pigs' teeth can be a little sensitive after they get clipped so that should resolve itself.
Let us know what your vet says!

She was over fed brocoli, it was all she would eat all day, so the broccoli was the problem oops. Yes, she has been on antibiotics and pain meds. Where her eye was reoved the cess was under that, the vet cleared it when she removed her eye, an then stitched it back up. I was not able to clean the "wound" because it was inside, behind her eye, now behind the stitches. She went back to the vet today, the vet tested what bacteria the pus was. Opened up the stitches, in the hoe (where the eye is suppose to be) there was a pus, which she popped like a zit. It was vey nasty and smelly. She flushed it all. The said the abcess is behind the eye, but she doesnt know about the tooth. Could an acess under th tooth go to the eye? Anyways we are tryng a new thing now: the eye hole is completley open, no sticthes and I have to flush it 3 times a day for the next two weeks. I have 2 antibiotics now. What we are trying to see is if the wound will heal from the inside out, seeing that hole close. I have to be very careful the next to weeks, absolutley nothing can get in the hole. I hate to say this but I am hoping this is the case, and the abcess is still not grown in the tooth. Poor girl has lost weight, but is still a good weight for guinea pig.

It has just been one problem after another with my guinea pigs. My other sow has pooping problem, just noticed it tonight. She held her back up while pooping, pee comes out at the same time, not really squishy, just wet from the pee, then it dries up. I just dont understand why all this is happening, I feel like such a bad mum. He bum was wet so I wiped it, the colour was just a deep yellow. She is eating and playing. That why I would never tell, my attention has been so focused on Munchkin. When I went to put Munchkin with the rest of the guineas and had to watch them all together, thats when I noticed it. What is going on? I bought her from the same pet shop as Munchkin, the same day. I do not remember ever having this many problem with my guinea pigs before. I have only seen this once with her, but will keep watch for more symptoms, but thats all I got right now

Don't feel like a bad piggy mum, these things happen. The one with the popping problems, I would cut her veg out for a day to see if that helps. Any longer than that and you might need to give a vitamin c supplement.
