What are the beginning stages of labor? My piggie has what looks like bits of blood on her hair around her opening. She is acting normal. Eating, drinking and squeeking for treats. She doesn't have the pear shape that so many piggies have and I'm not even sure that she is pregnant. I did get her from a pet store where she was housed with males though so the possibility is there. We got her on June 22nd and since then she has gained almost 100 grams. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.... I have never had guinea pig babies.

Restlessness, pacing, laying down stretched out, grunting are some signs. All sows are different though.
If shes inpig you should be able to see/feel pups.

She does seem a bit restless. She has been laying down stretched out for about the last week or so. She hasn't really been pacing but she's not staying still, she moving all around eating and acting normal. She does have a big tummy but I can't feel anything distinct in there. I'm afraid to push on her too much. I am just concerned about the bits of blood, I tried to feel if her pelvic bones were separated but I couldn't tell. Some of the blood got on my finger and it was kind of brownish, not bright red. Her nipples also look swollen. When I rest my hand on her sides I don't feel anything moving.

If you hold her sides a little firmer than normal for a few minites you should hopefully feel something. You should be able to feel something if shes near her due date.
Some sows do bleed a little and thats normal. Do you have a picture and od weight of her.
When was she with a boar and for how long?

I've been weighing her every week since I brought her home. 6/22-664 grams (day we brought her home) 6/24-673 grams 7/1-665 grams 7/8-717 grams 7/15-758 grams We got her from a pet store and there were boars in with her. There were only 2 females in the pen, and at least 10 males. I have no idea how long they had all been mixed together. Some looked like they could have been her litter mates (similar coloring) so they might have been together since birth. The store had no idea how old she is, they said 3-6 months. She's in her cage with 2 other sows, should I keep a hidey in there so she has somewhere private to go? I felt her and was able to feel 2 distinct lumps but I don't think I felt any movement. She didn't want me holding her so I stopped. Attachment DeletedAttachment DeletedAttachment DeletedShe doesn't have the pear shape that I see in so many pictures. Plus she's really hairy also.

Well her bleeding stopped completely. Should I expect to see babies sometime soon? I put a hidey in the cage and she's guarding it and not letting the other sows in it. Should I take it out or leave it?

I would take it out in case it causes problems between them.

She started spotting again and is rumbling at one of the other sows. She is even mounting and humping her. I am very confused now, she's never done that before...

Sows who are pregnant dont come into season. Rumbling/mounting is usually a sign of a season. She may have reabsorbed/aborted the litter.
Keep an eye on her over the next few days and keep us posted.
No handling just plenty of veg/hay and good quality pelletz.

Well I haven't noticed any more spotting today. I have them on fleece so I would see it if there was. She's not rumbling or mounting that I noticed today. She's eating, drinking, and even popcorning like she normally does. Aside from taking her to a vet is there any way to know if she reabsorbed or aborted the litter? Also should I watching out for any thing in particular?
Thank you for all your help with this.

Pepper is doing fine, she hasn't had any more spotting at all. She's eating, drinking, and acting normal. She has still been rumbling at the other girls but no more mounting. There has been no sign of babies, so I'm guessing that she miscarried. I was kind of hoping to experience babies.

Aww sorry to hear about that, I know I get really excited for babies and it is really disappointing when not everything goes right.

I re-homed Pepper... I have a friend that wanted to take her to the vet in exchange for keeping her. I don't think that she needed to go to the vet but my friend was very concerned about her. I know that she is in a good home with people who love her very much and we get to go visit her whenever we want.
The vet said that she had a miscarriage and reabsorbed the litter. She will be just fine and is a very healthy piggie.
Thank you everyone for your advice and help.

The main thing is that Pepper was ok that is all you can hope for when Guineas have difficult litters/miscarriages.

It was very stressful, I think she was just too young to be pregnant. (I got her that way, I didn't breed her)
I am very happy that she is okay, it could have turned out so much worse. Plus it's hard not to worry when there are so many stories out there where the sow doesn't come out well.
