I just wondered if anybody could give me some advice please. Chips is making a strange sound which is like a cat purring. He has had one two sneezes today. Also there are a lot of fireworks going off.
I am not sure if is just frightened of the fireworks so I have put more igloos and hidy things in cage or if he is poorly. He is eating but has seemed quiet all day.
Actually both of the boys are quiet! I am quite worried.

Hi Karen, It could be because they're frightened, i've heard mine sneeze before & cough but it's not often & i put it down to hay or munching too quickly, Mine too have had "off days" which it could be with Chip. I'd keep an eye on him & Ranger tomorrow & see if he gets back to his normal self, if not i'd be taking him to see the doctor This is only my opinion, i am far from an expert hopefully someone with the knowledge will be able to help you Niki x

He's probably just having an off day. My girls have the occasional bad day. If he doesn't seem better in a few days take him to see the vet.

I just hope they haven't caught a chill in the new C & C cage, I think I have protected them from draughts and they have warm things to snuggle into.
I have got some Baytril left. It is the purring noise I am concerned with! It could be becuase Chips is frightened, I am just hoping it isn't a URI, especially as the vets are shut tomorrow.
Fingers crossed he is feeling brighter tomorrow.
Thanks for your comments
Karen

If he is breathing strangely or Wheezing it could indicate a URI. In this weather it is easy for them to get a chill. Try putting some vicks mixed with warm water near his cage but not anywhere he can get at it, that will help open his airway and help him breathe easier.
Just keep an eye on him and if it seems worse tomorrow make an appointment to see the vet just to be on the safe side. Any delay getting him seen could be the difference between recovery and going down hill. I would always rather be safe then sorry where my piggies are concerned.
Good luck and hope it's something and nothing, Dawn

Also you could try putting a humidifier near his cage. That way the air is more moist.

The good news is that Chips is moving about and eating his veggies and hay. He is still very puffed up (but his hair isn't falling out like Scampi's did) his purring is still there maybe a bit more rattly. He is chatting to Ranger - over the hay rack. I will probably give the vets a ring tomorrow as the call out charge is £85 for Sunday rates so I am not sure what News Years day would be! Oh I wish I lived in a hot country - anywhere without the damp and rain. Karen

The first thing that rodentologists reach for if they have a cavy with any sort of respiratory problem is a diuretic tablet. The CCT advise frusemide which is mainly taken by humans, but any sort of diuretic tablet will reduce any fluid in and around the lungs. I only learnt this when one of my teddies was wheezing and rattling. I rang the CCT and they said one 20 mg dose of frusemide (which I begged off my friend!) and wonder of wonders the wheezing stopped in a couple of hours! I suppose it makes sense when you think of it, but I was in a panic, so wasn't thinking straight anyway!

Hi Gwen
I have just gone and had a look for Frusemide on some sites and they say you need a prescription!!
Thanks I will mention it to the vets if I can get an appointment tomorrow.

Hi again Karen
Frusemide is a diuretic that humans take so it will be on prescription. I have to admit that I scrounged it from someone who uses it all the time. It works more quickly than the herbal sort, but they do work as well. Try Aquaban or Watershed - they're widely available in chemists. I understand that many guinea pig's lives have been saved at Cambridge Cavy Trust by using diuretics manufactured for humans!
Who cares as long as he gets better??

He's been doing this for a couple days now. I tried to get him in to the vet but there not open do to the holiday. Signs iv been seeing in him are Red Blurry Eyes, constent pooping and then he breaths really funny. Is my little boy dying or what? It's never happend before.

I have so many ways of keeping them cool. Maybe if you think the air is to moist for your piggie then you can hook up a heater or a fan to dry the air out.

I bought Chips inside and put a hot water bottle (that doesn't have water in - microwave thing) wrapped in towels which Chips duly sat on, plus some vicks outside the cage. He seems much brighter and the funny noise has stopped. I put him back in the new cage last night and this morning he seems fine. Panick over - I am not sure if he was scared of the fireworks or didn't like his new cage or he was actually feeling unwell! Thankfully he seems to be back to is happy self. I have kept piggies for 7 years and never had any problems what so ever, but the last three months it has ben one thing after another. I hope the new year will be healthier! Karen

I'm a bit worried now :S. My boys and girls always purr. Normally its when they're really happy or are just going into their fresh new cage. To them it means they love something.
