What a time i'm having with this pair! First Wallace with mites now Wilbur is showing the classic signs of the beginnings of a fungal infection. Just a small part on his back is greasy and having done the "tug test" the hair is definitely coming out, thankfully there are no bald patches............yet. I can't say there's definite flakes of skin, it looks like the hair root or tiny specks of skin. Anyhow's i've emailed Chrissie at GG and am awaiting her reply for the best treatment. I'll keep you all posted. I feel really bad at the mo' is it something i'm NOT doing as to why it's happening to them? I recently bought some Genie Pet Disinfectant and am using that (recommended on the GG Site), i use newspaper and soft shredded straw on their hutch floors. I only bathed them on 24th August-just bathed W & W again today in a medicated shampoo-thought i'd better do something!! (as i don't know if it's contagious.) I'll keep you posted on his progress Niki x

Hi Dawn, Thanks v.much. Chrissie emailed me quickly and apparantly there's a problem with fungal infections and lice at the mo, it's not something i'm doing/not doing - that's made me feel a whole lot better i can tell ya. I've ordered the products she suggested and am now keeping an eye on things in the hope he doesn't deteriorate too much til they get here.

Well now this is strange. When i found the suspected fungal infection I bathed Wilbur in my Polytar Plus Shampoo (an antiseptic medicated scalp cleanser for seborrhoea, psoriasis, itching scalp & dandruff), thinking i had to do something. My GG products have arrived so have been and done the patch test today, however, there is no sign of any greasy patches or flakes - NOTHING but beautiful silky fur.
I'm still going to do the oil soak and shampoo them all with the Manuka & Neem Shampoo as Chrissie's instructions but isn't it strange, fungal infections don't just disappear do they?

But i have to say having had psoriasis for the past 33 years i've had no choice but to love anything that stinks of tar ;D

What is polytar shampoo? Sounds like something I should have on hand for Porky, who gets frequent fungal infections. I wonder if I can get it over here in the US?

Hi Jude, I have Polytar Plus (i used to use Polytar Liquid) both are made by Stiefel, both are shampoos. Polytar Plus is a concentrated antiseptic medicated scalp cleanser for seborrhoea, psoriasis, itching scalp and dandruff. This is a pic of the bottle Polytar Liquid Scalp Treatment is for flaking scalps, eczema, seborrhoea, psoriasis and stubborn dandruff. Helps clear the scalp, soothe irritation and relieve itching. This is a pic of the bottle I get it mine on prescription but both can be bought over the counter at any good chemists. ** Oops Dawn posted before me LOL **

Thanks for the info! I just ordered some. Hope it will help soothe Porky when she gets her outbreaks. I love to have things like this on hand "just in case"! I found a "coat refresher" made of mostly aloe vera (all natural) at the pet store yesterday, and got that for dry winter coats. So glad my hubby doesn't mind an entire shelf in the livingroom closet dedicated to pig remedies and sudries!!

The one is the white bottle with green writing it just says Polytar AF on it not sure whether it is the same as yours but it sure does the trick Nope its not the same They are all tar based but each has other ingredients the one you have has zinc pyrithione in it. Zinc pyrithione acts to stop the growth of certain bacteria and fungi that are commonly found on the scalp. I'll have to get myself a bottle of that

I'm still fighting the fungus with these 2. Apparantly it's because i didn't "tug" enough hair out the first round of treatments so they never got rid of it. I've just finished their 2nd oil soaks/baths & have no idea wether i've "tugged" enough this time round, if their wheeks were anything to go by i'd say i have. Now i've run out of Manuka & Neem stuff & at just over £16 a go i can't keep buying it at the rate i've used it.
Do you get Polytar from any chemists Dawn & have you tried any other products? Peter Gurneys pages recommend Alphosyl, have you or anyone else ever tried it?

I got my polytar shampoo from ebay it was cheaper than the chemist. I haven't tries Alphosyl but if Peter Gurney recommends it it will be good. Here is a link to some on ebay Link to Alphosyl on Ebay it's near £6 in the chemist so this is a bargain. Dawn

The saga continues................. Yes they've STILL got it!!! Last week i bathed them in Alphosyl & plucked them & thought all was well, until today - they were really flaky so tonight they've been bathed in Polytar AF & well & truly plucked like the proverbial turkey - the poor little men, you should've heard their wheeks, they really tore at my heart strings I'm hoping this has finally got it & if not it's going to be a trip to the vets as it's now over a month since i first started treating them. I'll keep you posted, wish them luck Niki x

Aaww the poor things they really are suffering I hope you have got it this time Niki. Dawn So do i Dawn, i really don't know what to do if it hasn't gone this week, so far (touch wood) they seem fine, but this time last week they looked fine too, by Friday it was back! If it is still there does anybody have any ideas?

I think it's gone, they looked to have just "dry skin" & their hair's growing back nicely. Tho after doing them again with the Polytar AF i did seem to pluck most of Wilbur's newly grown hair out again I've had by far the best results with the Polytar, hopefully next week there'll be nothing at all to see. What's weird is there are never any signs of anything until Friday's Niki x
