Hiya Guys i have finally decided that i want to have my boys neutered but i cant decide which one to do first as i cant afford to do both at the same time
Nigel is the more dominant of the 2 and Sammy the more placid as you know i have a freerange set up but the boys are housed seperately in 2 c&c cages i just feel its unfair to have them seperate from the others and think that this is the best option
So guys i just want yur opinions please ?
Please be honest i dont take offence easily

Personally, I don't think the slight risk given of neutering them should be taken - if they are living together happily I would just leave them. (sorry if i have got what you're telling me wrong) However its your decision and I would neuter Sammy first as not to upset the balance of dominance I hope it all goes well!

Sorry i should have said my boys had to be seperated as they were fighting i have 3 girls who are freerange with the boys held in 2 seperate c&c cages thats why i want them done so i can house them together i.e 1 boy & 2 girls and 1 boy 1 girl

I can only go by my recent experience. I have recently got an approx 18 month neutered male form the RSPCA. As far as I know the op went without any problems and Ranger got over the op OK, although when I first went to see him he smelt awful > As he is my first longhaired piggy I was sure why this was. I had Ranger for approx 4-6 weeks and two huge abcesses blew up over night, both right on the incision scars. Ranger was very poorly for about a week and the vet didn't think he had long to live but with their care and mine he has pulled through. He absolutley fine now. After much advice fromm this forum and others apparently abcesses can come up to 1 year after the op - and can be FATAL! So this is my opinion only, I would only have it done for a medical reason. Sorry that probably isn't what you wanted to hear but I assume many people have no problems at all - otherwise vets wouldn't offer the op. Karen

I think neutering a piggy isn't to be taken lightly, any op can be dangerous. Are you willing to risk losing them? I am with Karen, I would only do it for medical reasons but obviously it's your choice at the end of the day.
I hope all goes well for you and the piggies, keep us updated wont you? Dawn

I am with Karen and Dawn. I would only do it for a medical reason. Unless neutering them and putting them with a couple girls is the only option for friends for them left. If the boys can chat with another boy or even chat and see the girls he is fine.

There do seem to be big risks with it, but do you trust your vet?
Is he good with guinea ops?
I dont know, but I wonder if perhaps the op or the after care has to be exact to avoid complications
I can see why you would want them to live together in two groups though, easier and very nice for the guineas

I dont know, but I wonder if perhaps the op or the after care has to be exact to avoid complications I thought I would mention that when I collected Ranger all his scars had healed and fur grown back and I was told he was fine and been discharged from the vets so I was really surprised and very upset when the abcesses came - which would of been approx 8-12weeks after he had the op! Yep i can see your valid points and i do agree with what your saying i suppose im just trying to please them all as i dont want them on their own. Big decision and one not to be taken lightly i know.
Plus having the girls on view seems cruel as well becuase it seems to tease nigel more so but it that a valid reason enough.
decisions decisions
Ok so ive heard the bad experiences has anyone had any good ones or once theyve had them done problems with settling them with the girls ?

I have a happy story My Albie was neutered last August by the lady who rescued him & he's had no problems to date, he was introduced to 2 ladies (Lottie & Maddie) in October & was a pig in heaven as he'd previously lived alone for 2 years in a hamster cage. I adopted them 1 week after they'd been introduced, poor Albie's hen-pecked but he accepts that & is a very happy boy, they're a well bonded trio Niki x

Ok i have now made a decision and i will be haing Sammy neutered i have made an appt for him on Friday. Obviously i understand that this is probably not what you would like to hear but i feel that i am doing what is right at this moment in time. I will also understand if you wish me to leave (i hope wont) but i would respect your wishes.
I have read up on things again today spoke to the nurse at the vets several times and feel confident that they will look after him.
Thanks everyone

Thanks everyone You have to do what you think is right for your piggies as you know them best. No-one would ask you to leave for making your own decisions, this forum allows people to express their own ideas & opinions & is non-judgemental, just some of the reasons why i love it on here Good Luck with Sammy, i hope all goes well for him & you & let us know how he goes on & what he thinks to his new harem when they're introduced ;D Niki x

Good luck with the op! I hope it all goes well and he settles quickly with the girlies - lucky Sammy.
Of course I wouldn't want you to leave or I would never leave my opinion again! As I am no expert and only have two pet piggies. You know your piggies best and how they fit into your family. So all the best!
I will look forward to hearing how he fits in the with the others. I was told that it can take 4-6 weeks for his male hormones to stop working after the op.

It is your decision as the owner of the animal but I agree with the other ladies. I have raised piggies forover 12 years. I would never put my animals under any type of anesthetic or what have you and risk losing them, because that is what can happen, unless it was a medical emergency. They were not meant to be neutered or adjusted and vets just make a lot of money out of people who wish for convenience and housing issues to have them neutered. For your sake, I hope all goes well but I certainly am wish the no go on this deal. Linda

Linda Thanks for your comments i understand what you are saying i certainly dont want to debate and fall out with anyone but at this moment i feel that i am making the right decision in my circumstances. I already think that one of my girls may be pregnant and i certainly cant take the risk of them all being pregnant. (my daughter inadvertantly put the girls in with Sammy by mistake back in the beginning of december
