i was wondering if someone could help. about a month ago my piggie went to the vet as he was off his food and water. he had a sore tummy so she gave him anti biotics and he picked up only to go down hill again about a week after he finished his week treatment. but this time with no obvious symptoms. so he was given antibiotics for 2 weeks. now he sometimes has problems passin his poo and the stick together in clumps. im really worried as he is a skinny little guinea and is not gainin weight very well as he lost a lot when he was first ill. we are givin him some probiotics in his water, is this a good idea? thanks.

My suggestion would be to find a vet that maybe knows cavies a bit better. If he's been on antibiotics and they aren't working, then the vet should be doing tests to find out why, not just putting him on more. I would seek a second opinion here. Do keep us updated

hey just to update u.
eddy does seem a lot better in himself and has gained more weight. (i weighed him yesterday!) which is good. he is eatin and drinkin, but has a really dirty bum an is havin trouble passin his poo. i dont no whether to check with the vet as they arent very knowledgable when it comes to piglets and im not sure were else to go to get him checked out. could he have impaction? he is only just over 2 years old.
thanks.

It could be a teeth problem causing him not to eat as well. The poop change is most likely due to antibiotics. Yes, probiotics in the water is good, but he most likely isn't getting as much probiotics that way. I make some chamomile tea and let cool to room temp. Take a probiotic capsule and dump 1/2 of one into a small bowl. Add a small amount of chamomile tea to make the mix able to easily be drawn up into a eye dropper ( preferably glass dropper b/c they chew them) and give it 2 times a day that way I know they get plenty. Or, if you have powder probiotics this works too. He obviously needs some tests to figure out what is really wrong.

eddy has put on more weight and his bum is a lot cleaner, he is eatin and drinkin and seems quite happy in himself. his top front teeth have now snapped off quite short and i think he may need to visit the vet as his bottom teeth are gettin quite long. they are hard work my guineas but i wouldnt be without them!
thank u both for ur advice,

If piggies bite on the bars this can cause their teeth to break also a fall or if they have been dropped.

eddy has not been biting on the bars, not that i have seen him do anyway and he has definately not been dropped. i think it could be because they grow towards each other a little (his top incisors that is) but he seems happy enough at the mo. i do tend to worry a lot. his bottom ones are a little long, when should i take him to have them trimmed? thanks very much

Oh right I have a piggy that came to me with crooked teeth. I didn't know if it was genetic or a fall before I got him but he has to have his teeth trimmed regular because they snapp off unevenly. Here is a pic of his teeth are your pigs teeth anything like this? Excuse his stained mouth he has been scoffing carrots As you can see one of the bottom teeth bends over the other one :-\

The teeth shouldn't get overgrown if you give them plenty of hay and veggies to munch on. They should meet nicely in the middle if they don't then that's when you need to worry. This is pic of health teeth, this is our Chardonnay

eddy has readily available hay and lots of veggies to eat. he does chomp his carrot into little bits though, so im sure his teeth are fine. will keep an eye on them.
thanks again for your help
