hey just wanting some advice. my poor guinea eddy is ill again, he has had a cold for the last week and two days. as soon as we realised he wasnt well we got him to the vet. she gave him baytril and as he didnt seem too bad, and his chest sounded ok, she said just for 5 days. after 5 days and lots of encouragment on the eating front he still wasnt 100 percent, so he has now been on baytril 8 days. he is eatin but bein very picky and not eatin the leafy veg but his breathing is still not good and its quite pronounced. (his body moves a lot.) just wonderin if there is anything else i can do to help him? his nose is still a little runny and he has crusty eyes. he is better than he was at his worst but he still isnt great.
thanks

I think you need to change from Baytril to Septrin,Baytril does'nt always work and it certainly is'nt working in this case,or you could try Sudafed,as you will have to get Septrin from the vet. What doseage are you using?I usually use 0.2ml twice a day,no more than that though, even if the vet says so.

we are givin eddy 0.14 twice a day and we have probiotic to give him but he doesnt want to take any from us at the moment. the only problem with goin to see the vet is that its a drive and one that stresses eddy out quite a bit. but she is happy to talk on the phone. what dose of sudafed would be suitable? how long for? eddy weighs about 850grams.
thanks

I use a juicer that we bought really cheap from wal-mart here in the US. My vet recommended doing that to his veggies. You can see my thread on Pneumonia-Otter's Journey as to what I feed him. He loves it. The other thing he really likes is the human Welch's Strawberry Kiwi fruit juice that is 100% Vit C. I only mix 1 tsp or .5 tsp most meals. I'm sorry your baby is sick. It's a very helpless feeling when you want to do the best for them. You're in my thoughts and give your little piggy a pet and some encouragement from me and Otter. Hugz, Tina

just wanted to add, that eddys runny nose is clear, its not greeny or yellow, which indicates an infection and the vet said his chest sounded quite clear. so is it a URI? am confused,
eddy has been so poorly these last few months because of something else, which totally baffled the vet cause she couldnt diagnose him. he stopped eating and just wasnt very happy, he lost lots of weight and we had to syringe feed him. he was on the mend and was almost 100 percent and now this. i just wondered if it could be a reason for him bein so poorly, or is he just a sickly guinea. i believe he is the runt of the litter.
i really just want him to be better.

Maybe an allergy to the type of bedding you're using??? Not sure but I had some paper stuff and found out it was treated with a chemical that Easter didn't like. Are you also giving Eddy some probiotics to put back healthy bacteria? From my understanding (and I'm new at this) Guinea Pigs can't live without bacteria in their gut. The long dose of antibiotics may cause this too.

eddy has got worse. so he is off to the vets again in a couple of hours. he is barely eating anything and he is feelin very sorry for himself and he is having some of his probiotic water but most of it is endin up over me.
we have taken out his paper beddin just in case its not helpin the situation, but it hasnt made any difference.
this is the worst he has been so far.
i really hope he is goin to be ok

I think you need to take him back to the vets I think. I would say his dose of Baytril isn't high enough either. He should be on between 0.4 and 0.7 depending on his size. Hope he gets better soon.
