My poor little guinea pig baby (must be less than a year old), Chewy, had diarrhea this morning and was lethargic and shivering. I took him to the ER vet right away. As we got there, he started twitching and was really cold. The vet said he was already showing signs of neurological damage and was very dehydrated. And that he was too skinny for his age. I was told that it was either a neurological or bacterial problem and that he had less than a 50% chance of survival. Being that he is so young, I gave him what little chance he had. He got fluids, antibiotics, and pain meds. The last two I have to give him twice a day. He should improve by this afternoon. If he's not better tomorrow morning, they suggest that it may be a good idea to decide then if I should put him to sleep or not. I'm so scared. I don't want to have to put him to sleep. He was perfectly fine yesterday. Please give me some comforting words.

I'm so sorry. The same thing happened with Parsley a couple of months ago. I can only tell you that you did the exact right thing, you didn't delay his treatment, you did the best you could for him. I didn't know how serious diarrhoea is and stupidly waited for the first available appointment which was mid afternoon. I haven't forgiven myself for letting him down. But you did the right thing, you took him straight away, you really couldn't have done any more so please don't blame yourself. Diarrhoea just takes them in such a short time, it's horrible but at least there's no prolonged suffering. He was young of course but you gave him a good life. Thinking of you x

so sorry to hear this :-( . Do you wash the veg first before giving it to your pig ? Is there any chance slugs could be getting on your veg or near the cage ? do you feed a lot of lettuce ? sorry for the questions i am just tring to rule out any way your pig could get the runs . Its hard to save them when they get like this because they go down hill so fast , as Abby has said you did all you could xxx

Thanks for asking questions. I'd love to know what happened. I even looked into autopsies, but I can't afford one, especially since they said that if it was a bacterial infection or neurological problem, they would need to send in some tissues, which makes it more expensive. (sorry, run-on sentence) Anyway, I washed the veggies I gave him, but I may not have washed them well enough. I will look into it and definitely be more careful when I feed my other pets.
