My first guinea pig died from either a bacterial infection/neurological infection/ both. He had diarrhea, was dehydrated, twitching, and cold. I keep going over and over what I did wrong in my head. And I'm getting really paranoid that the same thing will happen to the two girls I have now.
Could it have been that he ate something he peed on or could he have gotten sick from eating his own poo? One of my girls pees on just about everything. Could it be because I didn't clean his cage well enough or often enough? Should I have bleached the cage? If so, how often should I do that? How often should I clean it with soapy water?
I was told that it probably wasn't the fact that I didn't wash my veggies enough because of the fact that I did wash them.
I'm sorry, I know this is a lot of questions (and I ask a lot of other questions), and I'm not very specific in my descriptions, but I don't know what else to do. This is really getting to me.
Has anyone else had this happen? Do you know why? Thanks so much for your time.

sadly some piggies are just not destined to be in our lives for long, i recently lost a lovely piggie who was just 11 months old, but there was nothing i could do to prevent it happening. if you look after your piggies well and give them a good variety of food to keep them healthy, and love them then theres not a lot else you can do, if it was a neurological problem then that most likely couldnt be avoided, they are supposed to eat their own poop, its got good nutrients in it so dont worry if they do that. i always give veggies a rinse,to clean the cage i use a cleaner by pets at home that is safe for small animals, and although i change bedding 3 times a week i only use the cleaner once a week. i understand how hard it is not to worry, i myself am constantly worried something is going to happen to my piggies, dont worry about asking questions,we are all here to help. dawn xx

We all worry about our pigs, it's only natural. I too worry about mine at times but I know I do my best for them. They get the best dry mix I can afford (Wagg Optimim) fresh veg everyday, lovely fresh sweet smelling hay and clean bedding. They also get love and attenton what else is there to do.

I think with what you tell us of how you look after your pigs there's not much more you could do , but i have always said the day i dont worry about them is the day i will give up keeping them to me its all part of keeping them x

Don't get too upset about losing your piggie friend, it happens to all of us from time to time, and although we try our best and love them to bits there is nothing else we can do.
If a piggie has diorrhoea then the best treatment for them is Immodium and dyoralite. Immodium stops the diorrhoea and Dyoralite puts back the flora and forna into the gut. I firmly believe that guineapigs can deal with a viral or bacterial infection, but what their little boddies can't deal with is the dehydration that occurs as they have very little body weight to start with and I think this is what they eventually succumb to. We have over time had one or two piggies with the runs and we find that this treatment works very well if caught in time.
