Well, Bracken was neutered 5 weeks ago and was getting all ready to put him with the girls. But last night when i picked him up I noticed like a blob of droppings stuck to his anus. I pulled it off an noticed some whitish discharge : pus. So I bathed him with hisbiscrub and cleaned it all out. His bum was clean this morning but the area is definitely swollen. So off to the vet. She says it's unusual and the best thing she'd recommend I did is to go and investigate this swelling and in case there is an abcess there to remove it completely. So here we go, another dangerous genral anaesthetic, more stress and worry and more money... Winnie and her eye had already been such a drain. I'm feeling guilty as well putting Bracken through all this because I wanted him castrated so he could live with the girls. It wasn't NECESSARY and now, I'm risking losing him again. Serves me right. Anyway, operation is next monday and I just hope it goes well and they sort him out.

Don't blame yourself, it's not your fault. I had my boar neutered two weeks ago and even though I knew the risks I did it anyway because I thought he would be happier living with his girlfriend than on his own. When I weigh up how happy he is now compared to before it was worth the risk and I'm sure that's how you feel too. I hope he gets on really well and gets back to himself soon

Bracken is a gorgeous pig, I remember drooling over him at the shows. Good luck!

Thank you Tracy. He did used to do pretty well at shows but more importantly he's got a lovely character and he is very dear to me. He's your Beechnut's dad (can't remember what you renamed him!) and a truly gorgeous pig. Really hope it's going to be alright...

Well, he's back home now with a nice set of stitches. He indeed had a big abcess and they removed it. It was pretty close to his urinary tract so gotta watch he's peeing ok. He seems himself, lively and eating well. Now they told me to watch that he doesn't mess with his stitches, but how the hell am I supposed to do that?? He seems ok this morning, but I can't watch him during the day when i'm at work so just got to hope he'll behave. He's not usually a naughty pig! Anyway, glad it's over, going back thursday for a check, and hopefully, he'll soon be as good as new!

Good job you brought him in! It was the same with our Xander, we checked his stitches every day but he still got at them in the end. Because of where they are it just looks like they're bending down to eat some poop so it's hard to tell. All you can do is have a look every day and make sure it's not weeping or inflamed or anything. If you have need of it (hopefully you won't), our vet gave us Intrasite Gel at our one-week check up to help speed up the wound healing, so if after a week or so it's still not knitting together you could try that. We put it on Xander three times a day for four days and I swear, it was more closed up every time we put on fresh stuff, it was amazing.

Oh cheers, thanks for the tip! My concern is that I am going away in less than 10 days and i'll be away for 2 weeks. Great timing Bracken. I have a petsitter coming every other day (can't afford every day) but I'm already worrying about him... We'll see how he is in 10 days, but nothing's as easy and smooth as it should be with animals, hey!

Aw i really feel for you... my animals usually get sick at the most inconvenient times(not that its their fault) either when my partner is away with the car or like you, just before we are going away. Hopefully Bracken will be all healed up before you head off and you can relax knowing he is in safe hands

Oh thanks guys! Hopefully Braken's stitches will be coming off just before I leave. If nothing goes wrong, he should be sorted before I go to France. I'm trying to stay positive! He is looking good and the vet was happy with the healing this morning... Fingers crosses! By the way, they didn't glue his stitches this time. Don't know why.
