I just got home from the vet after noticing puss & infection all of a sudden almost 2 weeks after his surgery. Is this a pretty common condition to happen after neutering surgery? I followed all of the vets instructions for his care after surgery. Now he is on baytril and a xenodine flush 3 times a day. Should I be giving these meds myself? The vet says so, but I kind of feel like it might be something that a doctor should be doing. Does anyone else give their guineas these meds? How long will the abscess last & do they ever come back?

Oh poor thing... It's a nightmare these complications. I hope your little guy will fare better than mine. I think if the abcess doesn't go down on its own, they'll have to operate him to remove it as you really don't want it to burst inside him. Depends where the abcess is. If it's just the skin, then you'll prob be all right just doing what you're doing now with antibiotics and cleaning up the area when the pus is coming out.
