I went to clean out Neo's cage today, and i use the white carefresh, even though it shows poo and pee very well, I like using it so that it will show when there is a problem, and well it did just that. I noticed some of the bedding was red, and he hadnt had any red bell pepper lately, so I knew that wasnt it. So I put him in the carrier I put him in for cleaning his cage with fresh bedding and sure enough he peed and it was bloody Now he doesnt seem like he's in pain when he pees, he doesnt squeak, he still eats like there is no tomorrow and drinks a LOT of water. There are no vets open now until Monday, and after reading some of the other messages about this, I am going to go get some cranberry juice and give him some, hoping he drinks it. I probably missed something somewhere, but is there anything else I can do for him, or anything I shouldnt give him until I can get him looked at, unless it clears up before then? This poor baby has had nothing but problems since I got him, I know its probably nothing I have done, or heck maybe it is, I dont know but he's had such a rough life. And I feel so horrible for him it just makes me cry.

I'm sorry to hear about Neo.........you could also try homemade barley water as it will help to soothe any inflamed tissue. It's always helped whenever one of my piggies has passed blood in their urine. I hope everything will be alright with him, he's such a sweetie. (((((hugs)))))

Cuddles to Neo! And cuddles to you too. Don't be so hard on yourself - piggies are like kids, no matter how well you look after them, sometimes they're gonna get sick and it's no one's fault!

Hi, sorry to hear this, Neo is so tiny and beautiful and i am just like you, the moment they get sick i feel like it's my fault and get so distressed with it. Here is the link to Peter Gurney's advice including how to make the barley water Cavymaniac mentions. I'm sure you could get some pearl barley from a supermarket today. I hope Neo recovers soon x www.oginet.com/pgurney/cystitis.htm

Thank you all for the kind words and the advice and link. i will definitely check it out. He does NOT like cranberry juice. I gave him some in a cup in his cage and he hasnt touched it. I thought about diluting it so its not so strong, but he keeps turning his nose up. It hasnt slowed down his eating regular or drinking thats for sure.
i checked his cage this morning and there doesnt seem to be anymore blood, the tinkle seems to be back to normal again, so i dont know what the deal was, but i am going to watch him like a hawk and still see about that barley stuff you all suggested just to be safe.
You cant call a vet for advice because the first words out of their mouth is "bring them in" just so they can get money out of you even if its something simple you can do at home. But if there is still no more blood tomorrow, i wont take him to the vet, but if there is any sign at all, he's going straight in.

when i first got harry, he had orange pee, and i found out it was due to the orange biscuits in the gerty guinea pig food he was eating (they are now on wagg pellets) so it may be something as simple as that vicki,i think you are doing the right thing, and if there is no more blood or funny colour to his weewee then not much point taking him into the vets hun. im sure you will notice if theres any changes in him. xxx

Ya know I was reading that link given, and it said something about how they go high up on their hind legs when they are about done tinkling. Ever since Ive had Neo, he will be sitting there, then hike up his hind end and then walk off, I just thought it was a funny quirk of his. He has never wheeked when thinkling, he's acted perfectly normal. So it makes me wonder with him ya know. I mean he doesnt do it in an extremely exaggerated fashion like it says on that link, i just thought he was sighing basically thats what it looks like when you see him do it. he is such a strange piggie.... **sigh**

I tend to syringe the cranbery in so that it gets some into them. That way I know they are having some.

Yeah I saw that about syringing it to them after i gave him a bowl of it LOL Im heading to the store now to get him some fresh veggies and to see if i can find that pearl barley stuff to make the barley water. i have syringes left over from the squirrels I rehabilitated last summer, new ones of course LOL so I will use them and hopefully get him fixed up. Cant stand to have my little man sick

In my experience they don't all squeak when weeing, i had a boar who pee'd bright red blood & lots of it and never made a single noise when weeing. Thankfully it cleared up after a course of antibiotics. Good Luck with him & i hope whatever caused it has now gone

Well I looked everywhere for pearl barley today, and heck almost everybody I talked to didnt even know what barley was....all I could find was quick barley, the kind thats done in like 10 minutes of boiling water...but not gonna give up. Gonna call some other stores tomorrow and see what i can come up with. He is no longer peeing blood though, but to be on the safe side I am going to give him the cranberry juice anyway for a bit, but do yall think i should go ahead with the barley stuff even though the bleeding has stopped?? He has lost a little bit of weight, i can tell, so gonna stock him up on some more of his favorite veggies to get that weight back on him. he's so tiny he cant afford to lose weight, he would disappear on me. And I thought I felt horrible when my human kids got sick

Hmmm well Neo had been acting kind of lethargic with the peeing of blood and losing weight, even though he was still eating and drinking... As I told ya the blood in the pee stopped, and last night I went to give him fresh hay and he started popcorning, he has NEVER popcorned before...he was all excited and acting all happy to be getting fresh hay. So he is feeling better thank goodness, but he is still gonna get some doses of cranberry juice...cant hurt him thats for sure. And still no luck in finding any pearl barley. I asked one lady in the store if she heard of it and she said " no never heard of that person" I about died laughing. Nobody seems to even know what it is, maybe its an overseas thing and not a US thing

I hope this is just a one off for him vicki i worry about him being so small i wouldn't like it to be his kidneys . If there has been no more blood then it is a good sign , do you feed any spinach or parsley ?

Post by vicki on May 12, 2009 2:35:23 GMT
Nope there hasnt been anymore blood and I have checked at least 10 times a day to make sure LOL.. he even gave me a dirty look (if thats possible with that gorgeous little face hehee) one time cuz he was napping and I was determined to check under him.
He hates spinach, wasted my money on it, had to throw a whole bag away cuz he wouldnt touch it... and I hate it too LOL I havent tried him on parsley yet, working my way down the comprehensive list thats here in the forum... he's just so darn picky.... he doesnt like brussel sprouts, brocolli, spinach, oranges, and something else that i cant remember right now.... but he loves his lettuce, cauliflower, red bell pepper, celery, grapes, apples, cucumber, those are his favorites.

Unfortunately its not over...the blood came back. When I had taken him into the vet the first time for the mites, the vet just gave him the topical and kinda went on, kinda rushed us out...but the second time this vet took his time and really seemed to care...he was the same one that saved my cat Rio's life in 2005 and was so sweet and friendly (heck Rio purred the moment he touched him and rio dont do that). So i called him to talk to him about it and Neo is going in this afternoon, because of the weight loss he wants to see him. So he will be going in this afternoon after he comes back from his lunch break and I will let you all know what he says. Keep your fingers crossed its not something horrible becuase if I lose my little boy, I dont know what I will do. I sat here last night holding him and just crying my eyes out.
