I am still having problems with my beautiful Molly. She had bladder stones removed by surgery last December and it worked well. I have been treating her with chinese herbal tablets and regularly check her pee for blood or anything abnormal.Over the past couple of weeks she had some blood in her urine and a couple of times cried when she peed as if it was uncomfortable, though not often. Anyway the pee was very yellowy and cloudy so I decided to take her to the vets to get some anti-biotics last week...I must say that in herself she is absolutely fine, great appetite, maintaining her weight and bright as a button. The vet tested her urine, as she obligingly peed on the table, lol...and she said that was a lot of blood in it ( though not visible) and a lot of protein indicating an infection. She had a feel of her tum and bladder and believes she can feel a stone, though she did say it may not be and could have been a poo , food etc, but if it is a stone she is unlikely to pass it as it was a fair size.
Anyway, her advise was to have her on anti-biotics permanently to avoid an infection form the stone which could cause blood poisoning etc, and just to keep her quality of life good but as soon as she starts to suffer pain and discomfort we need to reassess the situation. I got the impression that she didn't really expect her to live that long.
Anyway she has been on the anti-biotics for almost a week now, along with Yakult and we are syringing her water every few hours to try and flush everything through ( worth a try!). She is still perky, bright, gaining weight and eating well and not in any pain or discomfort as far as I can see. I am now thinking about having her on anti-biotics permanently and actually wondering if this is such a good idea...IF it wasn't a stone and was just food or poo the vet could feel and it was in fact bad cystitis she'd had would her being on anti-biotics long term not actually cause her other problems? Am I just clutching at straws here and as she has already had bladder stones is it likely that they will recur anyway and I am just hoping it's not that? Has anyone else had a Guinea pig on anti-biotics for a long period and if so how did they fare?
Anybody got any opinions?
