I came into the room and heard Doris sneeze - she sneezed about 10 times within a minute so I picked her up and tried to inspect her nose for any discharge as both my girls have had URIs in the past that took a very long time to clear up. To cut a long story short Doris's belly was wet and I dont know how it got wet because theres no wet patches in the cage! I tried to touch her belly to see if there was something else going on and she started squirming and squeeling! Anyone have any ideas what might be wrong?! Shes still very active and eating but her stomach is obviously causing her some distress and her breathing sounds a bit wrong becauses its snuffly. I cant do anything tonight so I will have to see how she is tomorrow when I get back from school (I am a trainee teacher) but I am quite worried something is up.... I know I am panicking probably over nothing but I am really worried!

Could she have maybe layed in her pee somehow? Does it sound like there is fluid in her lungs when you listen to her chest?
Better to be safe than sorry, get her to your exotics vet if you can.

Awww.. poor Doris. She could have a UTI Urinary Tract Infection. There are a few things that you could do to help her. Peter Gurneys pages are good. Here is a link www.oginet.com/pgurney/cystitis.htmShe may well need a cpourse of antibiotics if it is a bad infection though. Good luck with her Clair

Last night before I went to bed and after posting the first msg I checked her over again - her fur was drying out and she no longer squealed to have her belly touched. This morning I checked her over again and again her fur was dry and no squeals. I think I over reacted lol just a tad! I was so worried we would have to go through so much stress again with the girls because none of the vets they saw when they had a URI seemed to know what they were doing!! The girls were treated to a new cage at weekend... its like 2 nero 3 cages on top of one another with a ramp connecting the two. I inspected the cage this morning again and I now think I know why Doris was so wet last night... the girls have not got used to the change properly and doing their buisness in the same place they would in their old cage (poo mountain). Trouble this in the new cage thats the bottom of the ramp and on top of their plastic house thing (like a shelf) and looks like doris had been lying in it the dirty monkey! Im still concered about the sneezing so Ill keep my eye on her and any signs of discharge or her breathing sounding worse and she will be whisked off to the vet. She seems fine today though running about and eating! All I need to do now is rearrange the cage so they can have poo mountain back lol xxx

Hey I'm glad Doris is ok by the sounds of it, no doubt I'd have panicked as well. Maybe it is a good idea to give them they're toilet back if they're confused hehe I could be wrong but maybe she got a little bit of hay in her nose or something and that was making her sneeze?

lol Nikki its not quite that easy! The house used to be on the other side of the cage but with the new set up I cant turn it around (believe me I have tried) and it means they will have to figure out to use the opposite corner to pee and poop in. The ramp lands on top of their house now but its the corner their toilet area used to be and they keep peeing on top of the plastic shelf!! Its grim!
Anyone know how I can stop them from doing this lol xx

Oh no! That is not a simple solution! I'd only be hazarding a guess in saying is it worth moving what they pee on (hay or something) across the cage so they follow the smell? Or will that be even messier? It works on cats you see lol Harvey has no toilet by the looks of his floor, typical male, filth everywhere lol

No it doesnt appear to be that simple and they are just peeing on the plastic at the moment and i cant move that cos thats what the ramp is resting on lol argh! I am hoping they are just doing it cos its new and they dont know what else to do and this wont become a permenant habit! x

Whooo I have cracked it!! I put the fleece hammock at the bottom of the ramp flat and clipped it to the cage to make a carpet and now they are no longer peeing or pooping there! yay go me!
