I had 4 very happy, healthy and active piggies, up until this morning. I had one that for the past 2 weeks would constantly try and escape their large enclosure successfully. A few days ago, I figured out how she was getting free and closed those areas off, she hadn't escaped since. The pigs were perfectly fine and fit the day before and would sing every time they heard me near by. But this morning, 3 of the 4, not the escaping pig, but the rest I found dead. There are no external injuries nor bugs on them. I gave them fresh water and cleaned the bottles daily. They had 5 bottles total because they were water hogs. They had fresh fruits and veggies, timothy hay and some pellets. What could of gone wrong? My 3 year old, one of the 9 month old sibling and a new baby 3 month old all passed. Any ideas? Please help!

Oh dear I am so sorry to hear this, could they have been scared in any way? I know piggies can be prone to heart failiure.

I don't think so. But for 3 out of 4 to die at almost the same time....I can't believe this happened. I've had pigs since I was little. They all lived to be at least 5+.

I'm so sorry to hear of your losses......what an awful thing to have happened. It does seem very odd for 3 piggies to all pass away at the same time. Are you certain that there are no signs of anything being wrong?
Could they have eaten something that they shouldn't have?

My mother brought over celery, but it was not bad and they all had some...

If it was the celery then im sure you wouldve lost all four Im soo sorry to hear this, It must be frustrating not knowing what has happened. Could it have been something in the hay? a poisenous plant or something?

My mother brought over celery, but it was not bad and they all had some... Celery is fine, all my piggies love it so I can't see that it would be the cause. You don't have any houseplants near the cage where a stray leaf could have fallen in?

No, no plants were near them. And the grass I give them is chemical and pesticide free, as well as the timothy hay. I even give them only filtered water. Could it have been the ink in the newspaper I was using as a base for bedding? I've been using it for years along with kaytee paper tuffs, w/e it is called, never had an issue though.

Newspaper ink nowerdays is non toxic so i dont think that would be the cause, its a mystery but i hope you solve it for the sake of your piggie. Did they get any run time in the garden or somewhere they couldve picked something up and eaten it?

i haven't had any time recently to catch and carry 4 piggies one by one outside, so they couldn't of just found something bad.

This really is a mystery isn't it? Was it warm where the piggies were kept?... as heat can be a killer. Where they nice and cool? We've just had a heatwave and I had to have a fan on 24/7 for my lot, even then they were pretty inactive.

I did have a fan on when it was warm, mostly for the doberman. The piggies didn't seem bothered. Either way, they were kept cool too. On really hot days I would put bits of ice in their water, they really loved that.

I can't think what else it could be. I hope you manage to get to the bottom of it and let us know if you do.
