A while ago one of my boars had cyctitis, the first since I've been on Megazorb two yrs,he had antibiotics and it cleared up,but a week ago he started to squeal on passing urine and hunching his back,so instead of taking him to the vet for more antibiotics,I decided to try a bit of cranberry juice in his water, and suffice to say it has worked a treat,he's fine,he also likes the taste as he's drinking more, what I would like to know is would it be a good idea to keep him on it all the time?, and would it be good to give to the others as a prevention of urinary problems?

I am not sure about long term use. I have taken it myself long term to avoid the same problem and that works well but i'm not certain that means it's right for piggies. Perhaps if you diluted it really well with water so they are getting a low level of it and then if an infection arose you can increase it. I'd wait to see what others think as well though.

Full strength should be fine Vicki maybe in addition you could put an ordinary bottle of water on too just to give them the option though.

Well I actually put the cranberry juice in a tiny bowl I have and he drinks it up rather quickly, i never put it in a bottle for him. He has a large bottle of water he has all the time of course, then I had given him the tiny bowl with the cranberry juice, but I only gave him one of those a day cuz I didnt want him to turn into a cranberry hehee I think he would have drank the whole thing if I gave it to him.

I decided to take my boar off it,to see how he went, as I thought he might get used to it,and it might not work, and so far he's fine,so I'm thinking just use it if there's a problem.

I've had good sucess with it in the form of aloe vera and cranberry from Holland and Barratt, it cleared up uti very quickly. I also give them the stringy silky bits from the corn cobs because thats supposed to help, I dont know if it works but they seem to love it Isnt it great to heal them and save on a vet bill too...

I think cranberry juice is good for their health in small dosage and diluted in water I guess. But as they say everything in excess does gives you ill health. So I guess we let them drink moderately.

I know this is an older thread, but it was one I was going to ask also...if using cranberry juice regularly as a preventive would be good. I see it can be, if diluted. Anyway, I do have another question...would giving them fresh, raw cranberries a couple times a week, with their veggies and fruits do the same thing?

I wouldnt give cranberry juice regularly, as a treat, the same with ribena (mine get this for the vit c boost occasionally) they really enjoy it. If they will eat the raw fruit thats good. Mine are very picky with fruit.

There's a girl on this site (sorry, I can't remember your username right now!) who keeps a really cute guinea pig blog, and she test-drove cranberries with her guinea pigs last year. You can read the post here. She (or rather, her piggies) gave them 4/5 and says they can be fed a few times a week

Thank you...read that review. Very cute! My hubby is grocery shopping now and I told him to see if he could find any fresh cranberries. Figured it wouldn't hurt to add those to their fruit and veggie selection in a week. Hopefully, they like them.
