Last night, i went to check on my 2 guinea pigs. 1 is (was) one year old and the other will be 2 in December, both girls. I have saw dust in a coro (something or other) cage. They stay down stairs (as our heat is pretty hot upstairs), have plenty of food/water and I just found her dead. The past 4 days she had been peeing blood (I thought she was menstrating-now I know I was wrong and feel AWFUL!) and she had been having louder cries everytime we'd go down stairs. I have NO idea what happened and would like to make sure I can prevent this in the future. I'm gonna change the bedding and wash everything! Any other idea on what happened or any other precations I can take? THANKS A BUNCH! Corrine

Hi Corrine,
Sounds like your piggy had something wrong in her bladder or kidneys if she was passing blood. This could be due to bladderstones or cystitis.
To prevent this happening again you could make sure your piggies dont get too much calcium or vitamin D in thier diet.
Calcium rich foods are parsley only feed this once a week and food rich in Vitamin D are Carrots feed these only a few times a week and not too many at once. One or two baby carrots or one small carrot is enough.
Instead feed things like Celery, Spring Greens, Peppers all colours and romaine to name just a few everyday foods.

Hi, i am sorry to hear this. It does show how it is so important to not ignore any signs that all is not well as they are small creatures it doesn't take long for them to get seriously ill but i realise this must be distressing for you, i'm not trying to blame you. Here is Peter Gurney's advice on cystitis: www.oginet.com/pgurney/cystitis.htmAnd on kidney problems: www.oginet.com/pgurney/kidneys.htmYou might want to now get a young sow to keep your remaining piggie happy.
