Today morning i woke up at 5am to see my sister crying. I realized that our guinea pig was very ill. when i looked at him, his head was tilted sideways and he was'nt eating anything and squeaking alot. I picked him up and put him on the bed but he immediately lay down on the bed towards his tiled head side. Suddenly he dropped as if he was dead onto its side looking lifeless and was twitching. I called our vet and took him there asap. At the clinic i found that he had 103 fever. The doctor though never gave any reason as to why the read was tilted and i didnt bother to ask either. He gave me some medicines and told me that if by evening his health didn't get better he would have to give him some injections. By evening i could see there was no change in condition so i took him to the doctor. He then told me he couldnt give him the injections as our guinea pig was too weak. He also told me that if within a week his condition did not change he would eventually die. I even took him to another vet who also suggested someother medicines as well. The problem is i dont know anything about a guinea pig n me mom n sister are hysterical at the moment so i bought him to my place to take care of him. I need your advice. First of all any suggestions which might help him please let me know. I am feeding him lettuce and cucumber at the moment but he hardly eats it now, what should i feed him which would make him healthy again or atleast improve his condition as he is very weak. Secondly any suggestion which might help in reducing the fever. i keep him in a.c. room covered in towel properly is that fine? Please help me give all suggestions you can i dont even knw what questions to ask at the moment. Thanks a ton to all those who help thanks alot btw i think he is 5 months old! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So whats if its just guinea pig, why should his life have any less value than yours....

im so sorry to hear this about your piggy, if he has a high temperature you could try putting a cold bottle of water next to him to keep him cool, does he seem to be in any pain? if so you should get him straight back to the vets, has he had his ears checked? the head tilt could be a sign of a ear infection. hope this helps im sure if i have missed anything someone else will also give you advice, let us know how he gets on, i hope he gets better soon x

How is your piggy now. When you give him his medication also give him 0.2ml of neat Ribena which will give him all the Vit C he will need. Also it is important for any piggy that is on antibiotics to have something like Avi-pro powder which will put the flora and forna back into the gut and it is very important to continue the avipro for at least a week after you have finished the antibiotics, otherwise he will get diorrhoea. Have you tried feeding him grass, making sure that it is from a source that hasn't had any pesticides on it. Keep giving him small amounts of liquid from a small syringe (without the needle) We give ours glucose and vit C. mixed in warm water. We also talk to them and try to keep them awake as much as possible to try and stop them going into a deep sleep. Hope this helps

Thanks for all the help still please keep more and more suggestions coming.!
@ krissy - thanks for the help. I have another question though. Long time a doctor told me that lab animals dont need much water as they take water through through their food like cucumber etc is this true? and i also think it could be an ear injection and yea he was in pain the last time i saw him he was trying to squeak and he could hardly walk!
@piggymomma - hey thanks for the help i still am confused should i keep cold water or hot water as krissy suggested cold water
@ delukem - he back at my parents house so they are taking care of him so ill go check in the evening. Ill let you know what medicines the doctor prescribed me and ask him about the ones you suggested. The doctor had suggested that to me as well i and im doing that.! What exactly do you mean by deep sleep sorry im confused?

If he isnt eating you will need to feed him. You will need a syringe with the end cut off. Mix some pellets with water into a paste. fillt eh syringe an d gently put it in his mouth. Here is a link about syringe feeding, you need to keep his sytem going and keep him pooping and peeing or his system will shut down and he will die. www.cutiecavies.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=hints&action=display&thread=5458Hope he will be ok but to be honest it isnt looking good sorry

Im sorry guys to tell you this guys but my guinea pig [Ziggy] passed away this morning. My sister had taken him to another vet and he had given him two injections. He told my sis that if he survived till the evening he will most probably make it but unfortuantely he died within half an hour of the dose.
Thank you all for you help and i appreciate the concern and the support you gave me.!

I'm so sorry, you did your best for him but it's always heartbreaking and when they are such small creatures it is always difficult to bring them back from the brink. RIP Ziggy x
