hi
I'm new to the board and for some reason i couldn't post on the illness board? so i've ended up here and i'm hoping someone can help me. my little piggy was attacked by my sisters dog who we are looking after on tuesday. my fault completely, i left them in the outdoor run and my little girl got in with them, not sure what happened completely but to cut a long story short i found her lying in the middle of the garden on her back, virtually dead. (the pig, not my daughter oh god!)Anyway, i'm a vet nurse by trade so i rushed the pig into work and as you can imagine she was vvvv shocked. She had initial first aid the only wounds were two puncture marks round her neck so she was obviously picked up and flung. We also did a barium xray as the vet was suspicious of an oesophageal tear but thank fully all ok and no broken bones.
That night the vet recommended euthanasia as she was in alot of pain but i just wanted to hang on a bit which i know sounds cruel but i thought shes fought this far shes fighting bless her. sure enough later that night she amazed everyone and seemed to be recovering. anyway, i now have her home she isn't really eating so i am syringe feeding recovery 4-5 times daily which she takes well.
she is on meloxidyl and baytril and she had some vit b yest (something i found out about in an old text book at work - stimulates appetite)
day by day she is improving but still hobbling about but getting stronger every day. the vet is amazed and says she is so brave (we know how fragile these pigs are!) and feels bad for rushing in so quick to suggest euth.
Anyway, my point is - and sorry its turned into a long post - is there anything else i should be doing? just carry on with the syringe feeding? i keep offering lots of fresh food, oh and vit c tabs in the recovery diet - but how long should i give it? although she's recovering i don't want to syringe feed her forever! I keep looking at her thinking am i being cruel or should i just give you time?
i thought of trying her in her outdoor pen later (with dog locked away) for a bit of sun and fresh air? also her mate keeps attacking her and obviously she can't defend herself - sigh....help please!!!!!
thank you xxxx
