I have just noticed that my guinea pig Ossie's 2 top teeth are broken. He was trying to eat a piece of cucumber but couldn't eat it at all and just looked like he was licking it. Both of the top teeth are pretty much broken right off up until his gum. He can't sink his teeth into anything properly. I don't know when he did this or how but he was eating his dried nuggets just fine this morning. any advice on what i should do? I'm really worried that he's not going to be able to eat properly!

Aww.. poor Ossie Try cutting his food up into small strips until his teeth grow back. That will help him to be able to pick them up. They should begin to grow back withina few days and then he will be able to eat properly again.

Thanks for the advice Dawn. I have grated him some carrot and cut some cucumber up into tiny pieces and he devoured it! I will keep a close eye on him over the next few days until his teeth start to grow back.

Bless him! I have a problem with Sunshine and his bottom teeth, they are always breaking as he is always gnawing at the bars! No matter what I give him to play with he just is quite OCD about his bars!!! Crazy boy! Hope he is coping ok. He should have his gnashers back shortly!!!

Hi everyone I'm new here and I don't know wether you'll know what to do about this problem I certainly don't! My guinea pig Flossie, I think , has broken off both her top teeth and she still has bits of her teeth at the top of the gum which I heard grow back so I'm fine with that BUT I can see that ONE of her TWO top teeth is still attached to her gum like when you pull a tooth out and its hanging by a single bit of gum (ouch!). I'm guessing she has either swallowed the other one or its somewhere in her hutch but just to be on the safe side I'm worried she may have swallowed it. Does anyone have any suggestions about the tooth that hanging on her gum because I'm afraid she'll eat something and swallow it and take her tooth with it!! argh! Lilly x

I've never had a piggy with a broken tooth so I can't advise you but hopefully someone else can. In the mean time, keep a close eye on her to make sure she's eating.

Hi Guys
If both top teeth are broken then you have to watch that the bottom teeth don't become over grown, they may need clipping to keep them in check untill to top ones have re-grown.

I have had piggies in the past who have lost their teeth and then grown back and then lost them again. All my piggies were bought at Pets at Home and I have been told the cause of teeth breaking can be caused by in-breeding - None of my piggies i have breed or any I have got from breeders have lost their teeth.

my little babsys bottom left tooth is jagged and broken away slightly, her top front teeth afre fine though. i think she s been chewing at the bars. can anyone think of any problems she may get or will it just grow back like the others? its only a bit smaller than the rest and shes eating fine so no probs there

It should grow back fine but keep an eye on her top ones to make sure they don't grow unevenly without the two bottom teeth to balance them out.

Just did a Dental course at CCT and this was covered, if both top or both bottom front teeth are broken then the others need to be clipped back to the same length and food needs to be chopped up to aid feeding.
If they are not clipped then the remaining teeth will over grow.
All the teeth should grow back again in a week or two

Your local vet or rodentoligist should be able to do it for you, it needs to be done with special bone cutters (Rongeurs), if they come out with some nail clippers walk away, nail clippers can split the teeth.

My guinea pig has jumped out of her cage and has lost one front tooth and the other top tooth is loose. I have been advised to loosen the top tooth and take it out. So I shall cut her food up and hay, into small bits and I shall put it into the back of her mouth, how do I know when she is full-up?
