Morning everyone, I thought Id make a little post regarding Tia. Last night i found a very large lump on her neck that seems to have formed overnight, There was no sign of a lump wed night. Its a solid mass under her neck. This isnt affecting her eating/drinking or normal day what so ever but i have still made her an emergency appointment for today. My poor girl, if anything goes wrong its her. Im very shocked at the speed of this growth as it literally came up within 24 hours. I only have a couple of pictures just to give you an idea of the size and location. Ill let you know what the vet says when im back online. The first picture is a bit blurry sorry.

One of my guinea pigs misty, had what looks very similar to that, and i can't remember what the vet said exactly, but it's something to do with a build up of water in their neck. Misty's just got bigger and bigger until she couldn't eat and i had to put her to sleep and the vet said a few other people who brought guinea pigs in had the same thing! Apparently there was nothing she could do but i was very upset as she was my favourite sow I hope for Tia and you that this is something else and it can be sorted out. Good luck at the vets! Ben

I once borrowed a boar and noticed he wasn't eating very well. On checking him he had a very big swelling on his neck just under his chin, this had appeared very quickoy too. I took him to our vet who lanced it for him. He said it is something guineapigs get, but caught early it is perfectly curable. He had to have antibiotics and avi-pro. It did however, heal from the bottom and the guineapig survived. It was a bit smelly whilst it was healing, but I am pleased to say that everything settled down and he was fine. I hope your vet is able to do the same for your little one. I now keep a close eye on all our guineas.

I am shocked that Benji's vet wouldn't lance it if they assumed it was a build up of water/fluid. That shlould be very straight forward to do. It's yet another frustrating example of some vets not knowing enough about guinea pigs. I am sure Tia will get sorted out easily enough.

I know abby, i thought the same thing! i was at school when my dad went to the vets and i came home and my dad said she had to be put down! i was really upset and annoyed that nothing could be done. My vets are pretty useless though, but i'm sure Tia will be ok!

Have you checked her teeth, sometimes when teh teeth aren't right they can gett abcesses. I have a pig Larry who's tooth roots were bad so it got infected and an abcess formed. The vet lanced it for me and gave him antibiotics to help clear it up.

Hi everyone im very pleased to say that its nothing too serious. It was as Dawn suggested an absess. The vet isnt sure what caused it to form but it got drained, cleaned and shes been put on a treament of antibiotics. She has to live by herself for a couple of days which will stress her out, im not so happy about that though. The first things i checked where her teeth and mouth to make sure that wasnt the cause. Hopefully the absess will heal now, if it comes back she'll have to be put under and get it completely cleaned out Fingers crossed things will heal up. Thanks everyone, ill keep you updated with her progress And Benji im sorry to hear about misty your sow!! Its very heartbreaking having any animal Pts.

So pleased to hear that you had a sensible vet. Your little piggy should be ok now. As I said before. don't worry if it smells a little bit and is still a bit pussy, these abscesses have to heal from the bottom up to allow the fluid/puss to drain away. We kept our little man on his own for several days until it had stopped weeping though, just to be on the safe side and although he was living with a sow at the time he coped and went back to her when all had virtually healed. If he is on antibiotics do remember to give him some avi-pro as this will help to stop him getting diorrhoea. We used to put a pinch on a piece of cucumber every day and feed it to him. Avi-pro doesn't taste of anything so they eat it quite easily and don't notice it is even there. Keep giving it for at least a week after the antibiotics have finished as this is when the diorrhea sets in.
Good luck - I hope toi hear that he is back to normal very shortly

Shes doing well, a bit depressed shes by herself but iv put them all togeather for a few hours to run about. The only reason she cant go with the others is because her antibiotics go in the water. Hopefully she will heal up nicely with no complications
