I've just been weighing everyone & was "inspecting." Fitz seemed to have what looked like a tiny patch of "matted hair" under his tum, it looked a bit like a graze on his skin, but it was a hardened mass, approx 105cm long, i squeezed it & out came pus & blood & has left a 3mm hole. I am mortified that i didn't discover this earlier, i just didn't see it yesterday but it must've been there. I've given him 0.3ml of Baytril & have flushed the hole with salt water, nothing else has come out of it but the surrounding skin is rather red, he's not off his food & is behaving no differently to normal (I wouldn't 've known there was anything wrong with him). He also had a "plug" in his penis, the past few days Arthur has been mounting him quite a lot so am assuming this is why the plug was there but could this abscess, i'm assuming that's what it is, have been caused by a bite or is it just "one of those things?" I've separated them; Fitz is indoors on vet bed & i'll be taking him to the vets Monday, is there anything i should be doing for him or to the "wound" If it wasn't caused by a bite will it be ok for Arthur to join him indoors or should they stay separated? These are the best pics i could get of it

Oh argh oww! Poor darling, good you saw it in time to act and knew what to do
Its tricky keeping them clean underneath when its so close to the ground
I dont know anything about abcess in guineas, does it need packing or just keeping clean?

Abcesses can be caused by bites but I would think it unlikely he has been bitten underneath. You have doen the right thing by squeezing all the gunk out and putting Fitz on baytril. Most important thing now is to keep it clean while it heals. I am sure wit your expert care Niki he will be on the mend in no time Dawn

Someone has suggested diluted hibiscrub but i don't know where to get that Apparantly they can be packed with High Potency Manuka Honey, not sure i'd be confident trying to pack it tho Niki x

ah... abscesses. Dealt with quite a few of these lately. The main thing is to keep it clean. Flush it out daily even if it's only with water. Giving him small amounts of baytril is a good idea as it will fight of any bacteria. It's a good idea to take him to the vets too. I'm sure with your loving care Niki he'll be on the mend in no time at all!

I am livid, booked the app this morning for 11.10. Got there to find the receptionsist had booked me in for tomorrow, had Fitz's name as "Sith" because she thought i was saying he had fits!!!!!!!!!!!! I did see a vet (not my usual one, she was away). She didn't seem too impressed at my "knowledge" She asked how much baytril he was having a day. I told her 0.4ml. She weighed him & said he should be having 0.2ml twice daily which is what i'm doing Apparantly "i am on top of things" but i'm not squeezing hard enough - she got quite a bit out. Salt baths & flushing are the best thing to do & i've to carry on flushing until i can squeeze no more out. I did ask what may have caused it, she said most likely from an infected bite but couldn't be sure at this stage. Pearls of wisdom - Don't put him on woodshavings!! I said, "he's in the house on vetbed", the look on her face (he was in his carrier on vetbed) - i shall be looking for a new vets, i wasn't impressed at all previously they've been fine tho' fortunately i'm not there very often. She wants to see him again in a week, i will see how he is before i book him in again Niki x

How has Fitz healed up? Abscesses are really rotten to deal with, especially if you've never treated them before. Charlie's was a nightmare as the incision kept closing up. It took it bursting on it's own (after two lances) to leave the gaping hole necessary to keep it open and flush it out.
