Okay everyone. I will take any bit of advice at all. We have 2 foster piggies at the moment. Dunkin and Gouda. Both were left in a park with another male and a female when it was 111 degrees outside.
Right now Gouda has a URI. I think I've got that under control.
but
Dunkin has an abscess that I noticed yesterday. It is on his cheek. It popped this morning. I gave him 0.3 of Sulfatrim and cleaned him up a bit with some water.
What do you think I should do now? He will most likely be going to the vet today or tomorrow but for now.... what should I do?
Thanks in advance
Rachel

I've not had any experience of abscesses Rach but i would imagine to keep the area clean - bathe with salt water & check to see if all the badness has come out.
I'm sure someone will know what's best

Yes keep it clean and if there is anything in it squeeze it out. Not a very nice job but the more puss you get out each day the quicker it will heal up. He could also have a course of antibiotics to clear up the infection. I hope they both get better soon you are doing a great job Dawn

Thanks Dawn and Niki I have separated Dunkin from the others. He is in my bedroom in our old petstore cage. Our rescue leader says he could have a highly contagious type of abscess so now I am monitoring his cage mate as well. Dunkin has been eating some pellets and some melon so I know he can chew and swallow. Thanks very much for the advice. Rachel

Yep. It will need to be kept open until it's healed on the inside - abscesses heal "inside out". Flushing with betadine or chlorhexidine is - I believe - the solution of choice. ABs are also important to kill the bacteria that caused the abscess.
