Well, we thought it would be a nice idea to adopt 2 guinea pigs a few weeks ago. Within a few days the 4mth old sow had a significant lump under her jaw (no bite). Reading online I knew it was an abcess, took her to the vet, 200$ later came home and it seemed to be better. Now 2 weeks later, it's back almost worse then before (not the same region as I've keep this open and medicated with regular draining) but it's just adjacent/behind the original abcess. Now my vet wants her back in.....the bacterial test alone will cost me 136$ and that doesn't even include the office visit, new antibiotic or possible another drainage (which is another 200$). We're huge animals lovers and have adopted numerous animals but this is so expensive and from what I read can be chronic...what can I do so it's financially and humanly the right thing. I'd love to meet with a local breeder if possible (as I hear they treat their own pigs) Any help is appreciated! (Perkasie PA 18944)

I have this problem right now with a boar that lost a tooth at the root because of an abscess this is now returning. Abscesses more often than not do reoccur unfortunately I am treating him myself this time though. It is not a nice job but I have a syringe with a needle on it and I am syringing off the fluid as and when it fills up and he is on antibiotics and probiotics. I know vets can be very dear but if you can't bring yourself to squeeze it or drain it then that is the only option I can see other than the other option of having her PTS and I am sure you don't want to do that at this stage do you?

I borrowed a boar from my friend and he suddenly had an abscess appear in his throat area. My vet lanced it and it healed well. However it has returned and my friend took him to her vet to have it checked again. The abscess was in the root of the tooth and unfortunately there was no more they could do for him. He didn't seem in any pain so she brought him home. He lost his fight at the weekend unfortunately, but at least he was initially treated and it did give him another year.

Thanks for the info. I have been draining it myself, but the new abcess seems to have it's own 'pocket' behind the original one. The original abcess drains slightly and it still smells infected but it's the new abcess that has no opening. I'm not opposed to doing it myself (opening the new pocket), I just don't want to cause any injury. How do you get your antibiotics without the vet? I think it's crazy we can get antibiotics for cows/horses in the general feed store, but other stuff is only by prescription. I just can't pay another 300$ to get him 'fixed' which may only be temporary. Please respond if you can help with any tips. Otherwise I'm not sure what we'll do.

the reason you need prescriptions for some animal meds, is the same as humans. because its not safe to just buy it and give as much as you want,it should be done under a doctor/vets guidance.

How well do you get on with your vet? He may be prepared to let you keep some in just in case the abscess keeps recurring. It may well be worth asking.
