Minky one of my female piggies has a rather large belly!
I'm not sure if this is because she is over weight or if she may have something wrong?
She is eating well (she eats hay pretty much all day long!) and seems active and alert.
She is going to the toilet as usual and her poops don't seem anything other than 'normal'.
I was loving her earlier and when I toucher her tummy she did make a little noise, as if she was uncomfortable but she'll let me fuss her head with no noises.
What would you recommend?
Many thanks Josie x

Hi Josie Firstly she couldn't be pregnant could she? A swollen tum can indicate bloat (tho' i would expect her to be showing signs of illness), fluid or an ovarian cyst. I had a 5yr old sow who gained a lot of weight in a short time, she was eating, drinking & acting normally but something wasn't right - the weight-gain & her tum was squishy, tho' she didn't mind me manipulating her. The diagnosis was poor, the swelling was caused by fluid & she passed away hours after seeing the vet I don't wish to alarm you in any way but piggies are so very good at hiding their illnesses, sometimes til it's too late I would also recommend weighing your piggies regularly (i weigh mine every 2 wks) as this can be the first indicator that something is wrong. I do hope there's nothing wrong with her bar a healthy appetite

Morning,
With regard to her being pregnanct, we do have Roger and Sanchez but they are kept in a separate cage and they've never all been together... so, I don't think so.
Sorry if I'm asking people to repeat themselves but how much should piggies way (on average)?
My boys are now.... around 1 year and 8 months old.
My girls are now.... around 9 months old.
many thanks for your help Josie xx

weight depends on the piggy, i have three boys all weighing around the 3lb mark. one is 3yrs old,and two are 1yr old. different breeds differ in size,so this has a bearing on how much the piggy will weigh, as an example it would be unusual to find a himalayan piggy that weighs 3lb,as they tend to be slighter in build, on the other hand swiss piggies are large and often weigh in at over the 3lb, in my opinion piggies should look rounded, but not have their tummies dragging on the floor, and i dont think you should be able to feel their bones. how much do yours weigh at the moment? i also advise weighing weekly,as its very easy to pick up a loss/gain in weight before it gets too serious. xx

I don't know their weights at the moment, so I'm going to go home tonight and weigh them all!!!
Defo no bones going on... all have rounded bellies but can run around and regularly pop-corn when we let them out!
I'll be back on tomorrow to give you their weights...
Thank you so much for your help.
xx

your welcome, how much a piggy should weigh always seems to be a popular question, if you could get a picture of your piggy,it would also help as members often find it easier to tell by looking at a piggy if they look fat or thin, or perfect!!!

Yes some breeds are smaller than others so weights can vary quite a lot.
