I haven't introduced myself to the board yet because I wanted to get feedback on this issue quickly. A short background on myself: I have owned guinea pigs since I was 8 years old, so about 13 years. My last guinea pig died about a year ago, and I have not gotten another since then.
Tonight my landlord called me and asked if I would be interested in taking one in because one of his tenants had vacated the apartment nearly 3 weeks ago and had left a two guinea pigs in the house. No one knew they were in there. Sadly, one had died at some point during this 3 week period. I told him to bring him over immediately. When he arrived he looked horrible. He has a small water bottle attached to his cage, so I have no idea how long he has been without water. His food dish was empty, and the cage was a mess. He is extremely thin. He was very lethargic when he first got here. I gave him fresh water and some pieces of lettuce, as I didn't have any food for him. He began drinking right away and has drank about 3/4 of the water so far.
I went to the store to get some pellets, not sure if he would still be alive when I returned, but he is. I filled his dish up and he's been eating a little at a time. He seems slightly more active. He's being very quiet and doesn't seem startled by myself or my dog, but that could just be shock.
I have had guinea pigs for many years, but I have never had to nurse one back to health. Mine have all been blesses with long, healthy lives. Can anyone give me some advice? I feel so bad for this poor creature, and I want him to pull through this. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks everyone
