my boy peepi has a polydactyly toe, that is he has an extra toe on one of his back feet. poor little inbreed babe, but hes cute as a button. the vet is going to surgically remove it when he is out for neutering. just wondering if anyone else has had to have one removed and what their experience was like.

2 of my boars (who are roan abyssinians) have extra toes, as its very common for Roan Aby's. My older one has an extra on on both back feet and my younger one has one (did have 2 but one dropped off as they sometimes do).
Can I just ask the reason for the neutering as it can be very touch and go for a guinea pig to go under a general anesthetic. I would advice against it unless you really have to. However if its because he has a problem or something, then yes of course get him treated, and have the toe removed while he's under.
I personally think the extra toes adds to a bit of their character in a weird way lol.

desexed cause he is going in with our female, i dont want them breeding and he is going nuts being in the vicinity of the girls, he gets very stressed out and worked up over them.
the toe being removed would just be done at the same time. hes caught it a few times thankfully it hasnt torn.

My peruvian rescue sow Lola has an extra toe on both her back feet. She copes very well. I see no reason in putting her through the stresses of surgery to get them removed. I hope your boar is ok when hes all snipped and tucked!!

i agree, i dont really see the point of it being removed other than he keeps catching it. if they seem fine with them left on than may as well leave it.
i was just curious as to whether the piggies notice its gone or walk different after it has been removed?

Extra toes can be removed. Preferably when young using clippers or cotton. I wouldnt breed some a pig who carries this. Im unsure if its genetic etc. Sent from my GT-I9300 using proboards
