I have just been looking at my girls weights over the past year and have noticed that Gemma has lost 6oz over the past 12 months. It's been very gradual and she is eating well and seems happy and healthy, she was rather round before ...and to be honest still looks nice and plump. There have beeen weeks that she has put weight on and weeks she has stayed the same besides the weeks she has lost so it's not that she has been losing weight every week at all..hence why I have not really noticed the overall loss until now. Do you think this amount is an acceptable amount to lose over a year? I should add that she is 4 1/2 years old

Gemma is a good age and like humans as they get older they do tend to become thinner. We have just lost a 6yr old guineapig and she tended to lose weight slowley over the last 2 years or so and was very frail and thin when she died. So if she is eating and drinking and not looking ill in any way then it can possibly be attributed to her age.

hello twilight gal....the real concern here is to not only feed ur cavies but make them run around the place and get them to excercise a lot or else obesity can take place.... (*_*)

Hi there, this is my first time here, what a great site. I am learning lots!
My older boy Titch is around 5 - 6, not sure of his exact age because he was a rescue pig but I've had him for 3 years and they said he was approx 2 -3 when I adopted him. Anyway.....
He still seems very happy, eating plenty, drinking normally and very aware of what's going on. Still plays food tug o war with his mate Ollie. His teeth and mouth look fine. From time to time he has suffered from impaction which we have always helped him with. He has really slimmed down, it's been a gradual thing but noticeable.
I see there is a comment here that guinea pigs may lose weight as they get older? I have asked my vet but he doesn't have much knowledge. I feel as though it is age considering he seems happy and healthy in every other way. Would love to hear other experiences.
Thanks!

A lot of people comment that their pigs lose weight as they get older. Keep a close eye on your piggy and if he's happy and healthy and eating then I would say it's just that he's aging.
