My sweet guinea pig is 6-1/2 years old. She developed pododermatitis and was hobbling. Before I took Marshy to the vet I read about the condition. The general concensus for treatment seemed to be Baytril, Chlorhexidine soaks and possibly wrapping the feet in between soaks.
I brought this info to the vet. Told him that I'd like a script for baytril and chlorhexidine. She's an old girl at the end of her lifecycle and I want to keep her comfortable and keep the treatment simple. After speaking with me he took Marshy away. I asked where he was taking her and he told me he was going to clean her feet and get the meds.
He came back with her about 15 minutes later. Her feet were bandaged, swollen and leaking blood. He told me he had to cut into all four of her feet to drain the 'puss'. I was very upset.
He gave me a script for baytril, 0.2cc once a day for 14 days.
He gave me a small bottle of Novasol solution to mix with 1 gallon of water to soak her feet.
He filled a syringe with what he said was a topical antibiotic.
He told me to not do anything except give Marshy the Baytril and bring her back on Monday and he'll remove the bandages.
My guinea pig can't walk! I'm sick!!
I am feeding her through syringes and trying to keep her comfortable.
The stupid bandages are wet and leaking. It doesn't feel right. I want to take them off.
I asked for Chlorhexidine and was given Novasol. Didn't notice until I was home, though. I've tried to look it up and can't find reference to it as an anti-septic cleaner like the other one.
Can someone guide me, please!?
This is the sweetest pig and I'm beside myself. Thanks.
