s1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc429/daviniam/Here is a set of photo's of my piggy who has an open wound with something inside. I have taken him to the vet and he is unsure what it is that is inside the wound, he tried to remove it but Kip got too distressed I was so upset. He has prescribed medication that would normally treat abscesses as he wants whatever it is to be pushed out. I have to go back next week and if it isn't any better he has to have an operation to be knocked out and have whatever it is removed! We only bought him 2 weeks ago but we love him to pieces and I am beside myself not knowing what to do for him. Please help me. Davinia x

I would be wary of putting such a small piggy under a general. When I suspect an abscess I flush it daily with salt water, and keep the area clean. Heat applied to the area will help make the pus more liquid and run out easier, just make sure its not too hot. A towel thats been on the radiator or one wrapped in a hot water bottle thats cooling will work. Gently squeeze until nothing else comes out. Did the vet give you any anti inflamitory and probiotic to go along side the Baytril?

Thank you so much for your response, I will clean it out as you have suggested, my poor little man I have only been given one thing from the vet. I will give it a few days if it is not better I will go straight back in and demand more x

You need to get some probiotic, the baytril can cause the runs and damage the guts. I use Benecol or Yakult, 1ml with the dose of baytril

Oh poor piggie. I would clean the wound out as suggested and keep giving the baytril. I myself have never had a problem with the bayril causing upset stomachs so have never needed to use a pro biotic. I would see how the wound is once the medication is all gone, if its not any better then i would go back to the vets, I woudnt suggest waiting a week. If your in any doubt get a second opinion. Hope your piggie gets better soon, keep us posted.

Maybe you could get a second opinion. I met my exotic vet in petco where she was giving cheap shots. It was at night and I didn't know about the ER vet. I forget what it was called, but his insides were coming out of his bum and it was ripped (injury from other hamster, even though they were the opposite sex). She put it back in and sowed him up without any sedatives. It sounds terrible, but she said he wouldn't have made it through the night. The point is, that there might be another vet that may be able to do it without surgery. (She gave him meds after though, I think. I'm not entirely sure because it was years ago)

Oh your poor piggy! Definitely keep cleaning the wound and try massaging it yourself to get out what you can. Try giving your piggy veggies while you're doing it to distract him.
He's so cute and small, I hope he's okay.
