Hello! I have a problem. My guinea pig's hair underneath his chin is getting hard, twisted and clumped. I've noticed it before. it wasn't too bad but didn't concern me too much at the time. but today I woke up and it was pretty bad. I also noticed there was a red spot there, after looking closely, maybe he tried to pull it out? I used a wet cloth and warm water to try to get it back to normal, It's a lot better but I couldn't get it all out. His favorite treat is cucumbers, which are pretty wet so maybe he is drooling when eating, could be my guess. I've never noticed his chin being wet when I touch him or pick him up. I really don't want to have to take him to the vet again, first time was for mites, which has healed and his hair on his back has completely grown back. it was very pricey so I'd like to avoid having to take him to the vet but I will take him again if i have to! Thanks for any advice you can give me. thank you

Mite treatments from vets are always over priced in my opinion. With regards to a general check over, iv never paid more than £12 for this.
If the fur under his neck is getting matted then i would suggest cutting it back carefully of course to stop the hair matting. Is your piggie a longer coated breed?

Thank you for the quick response. I'm sorry I should of been more specific, he is short haired. but still long enough for the hair to clump and twirl. I got almost all of it out except for the little bit that is right up to his skin. Is there some kind of safe product I can use besides warm water? the clumps were really hard like dried gel.

Its very unsual for this to happen to short coated piggies, I myself have 3 long haired breeds and never have hair clumping issues under the chin. The only thing i can suggest to use is baby shampoo as itll be soft and would be nice to the piggies fur/skin.
Have you checked your piggies teeth for any problems, as he could be drooling due to overgrown teeth or mouth sores.
It may be worth getting him checked out by a vet, just phone a few surgeries and ask how much it would cost for a consultation, if you are able too.
If you can get a picture of his neck, the red dot your on about we may be able to help further.
