My lovely first g pig Ginger has a tumour. I took her to the vets but was offered to have her put to sleep this morning, I couldn't. I brought her home for a weekend of cuddles.

Hi
No the vet says she can't do any more. I have been cuddling her for ages and have just put her on her own in a fleece for a bit. All the others are running and jumping like crazy in the cage so it wouldn't be good for her. I may put her back in when they are going to bed and calmer. She has given up eating and drinking more or less and her breathing is deep and heavy. I just couldn't have her put to sleep and that was that, I had to bring her home.

Oh I'm so sorry. Must be very hard to watch. How old is she - not that it makes it any easier, but at least if she's older, you know she's had a good long life.

Hi Kellyb
No we got her in June, she was only about 7 weeks old and pregnant in the pet shop. She had 2 male babies, both fab. So she is only under one year poor baby. The tumour is by her tummy. I have some medicine to give her over the weekend to ease her. I will just have to take each day as it comes, the kids are upset but I had to tell them the truth. She has lost half her body weight in one week. The vet said her coat was lovely so no other health problems anywhere, just this damn lump.

Can anyone help please. The vet has given me Baytril for Ginger for over the weekend. I thought it was a pain killer but I see now it isn't. If it is a tumour then why is she giving me antibiotics if there is no more we can do for Ginger? It doesn't make sense to me.

Im unsure why you would have been given baytril and no pain relief. I know its hard but if she is in pain would you consider getting her pts. to ease her pain and allow her to go peacefully. Remember the good times when she was fit and healthy. I do know how hard a decision it is though, I have recently had to get my Tia pts due to re occuring absess's seeing her loose weight and just sit looking sad was gut wrenching so i had no choice but to let her suffer no more.
I hope Ginger is as good as she can be, give her a cuddle from us all.

Sometimes vets give out the antibiotics with tumours to reduce any secondary infections that might occur and to bring down any swelling caused by that. I agree you should have been given a painkiller as well though.
