My girls are all in great health, which I'm so thankul for, but I' worried that if they ever do get sick, that I'll have a hard time finding a vet. Guinea Pigs aren't very common pets around where I'm from. I only know three people beside me who have piggies and they're the homes I found for SubZero an Raiden's surprise babies. Before that I only knew one person who owned a guinea pig.
When SubZero had her babies we called the vet to ask a few question, cuz I didn't know much about guinea pig babies. He told me not to touch them until they were 6 weeks old, that I had to take Raiden out of the cage, and to not clean the cage for 2 weeks so it didn't scare them, and a bunch of other things that didn't make sense. Luckily I did some research online and found out the truth. But it makes me think. What if one of my piggies gets really sick? And what if the vet doesn't know what to do?

By the way, I've taken my cats to this vet in the past, and he really is an amazing vet. He has a huge heart and really cares for both pet and owner, and when it comes to cats he's really knowledgable. I guess he just isn't familiar with guinea pigs or was taught wrong. I don't hold it against him, I just wish people knew more about guinea pigs. It's frustrating.

Thats very unusual advice you were given by the vets about the pups. The only thing i can suggest is to look for an exotics vet or phone your local practice and ask if any vets specialise in guinea pigs or have a fair bit of knowlegde.
It can be hard to find a vet whom you think "yep you know what your talking about" but we generally think they are vets they should know....not always the case though.
Where in the world are you? Maybe another member may have an idea of any vets local ish to you.

Do you have any pet stores near you? If they sell small pets, they should have a small pet vet (also known as an exotic vet). That's the law around here. I met my favorite vet ever at the pet store when she came in. The employee there told me when she came in. She's sweet, knowledgeable, and she'll help you out with costs if you need it. I couldn't ask for a better vet. Are you in the US?

The pet stores here have to have a vet come (every week, I think) to check on the animals and help any that need medical attention. Also, the pet store where I bought my mouse had a policy that if the animal got sick within 15 days of getting them, they would get the animal back to health for free. I had to use that once, because it was at night and the nighttime vet costs a lot more and I was a little short on money.

I live in Canada. In the Maritimes
I never thought to ask the pet store, that's a great idea. I'll ask them next time I'm in there (probably pretty soon cuz I have to get my piggies their christmas presents) ^_^
