I really need some help. I recently got two new guinea pigs and I had noticed at the store that they had all these bumps on their skin and in their fur. I figured that it wasn't a big deal, that what they needed was to be brushed and maybe a bath. Well its been two weeks now and I think I'm partially driving myself insane over this! I brushed their fur and some of the bumps from their fur came out. Still I thought nothing of it. Then the bumps on the fur came back, I decided that I would give them a bath. My friend was over and I asked her if she wanted to help me. I was rinsing off the shampoo (I used the kind for guinea pigs) and I was looking through Scooter (my sister's) fur for more shampoo. I saw all these open sores they were bleeding.. Not gushing but they were red and looked painful. I asked my friend to carefully check Scuttle (mine) over and see if she could find any. She found them all over her body just like I had found. Well just tonight I was giving them another brush through and was combing Scuttle when I stopped and she began scratching at a certain spot. I felt around once she finished and she resisted to me and began running all over my lap. But not before I felt a really big bump. Not big enough to cause her discomfort but I think its making her jumpy and skittish. Ever since day one they were very laid back pigs and now they're a little jumpy. Has any one had this problem? Please help, I really need some advice!

I've heard of things like this, but never had it with my pigs. I'm guessing it may be mites? I've heard they apear in the form of bumps and sores, but no matter what, your piggy really needs to see a vet. Or there's special mite shampoo out there - maybe give that a try. It sounds like they're jumpy now because their skin is so sensitive - probably sore whenever they are touched.
Can you post a picture so somebody with more experience can see what you're describing?

It sounds like it might be mites, but I'm not sure. I'd suggest taking them to a vet.
I also think you should go to the petstore. Ask them if they've had a problem with mites lately. And if they still have other piggies, see if they have the sores. I'd let the pet store know, so they can help the other piggies if neccesary.
Good luck!

Alright, thanks! My mom is going to call the pet store tonight and ask about it but I figured I should ask people that have had guinea pigs more than me... (at least more experience) all of my previous guinea pigs have been exceedingly healthy... *shrug*

Alright well, just thought I should update, turns out that it was mites and Scuttle was going through the 'worst phase' (thats the part right before it starts to clear up) However after Scuttle cleared up Scooter started the worst phase and is right now in the WORST of the worst phase, she has lost hair and has one main spot. The vet said to put neosporin on it and the petstore said that yes they had been having problems with mites so now we're just hoping that Scooter can stop scratching at it long enough for it to heal. I think once that happens we'll be home free... We are starting to get worried because if it doesn't heal then she might stop eating... which would be baadd...
