my guinea pig is limping now I don't know if something happened to her leg or if its just the nails. If the nails are long and curling could that be whats making her limp or if she hurt her leg will it just heal on its own I am taking her to get her nails cut at the pet store tomorrow so if its the nails would she be walking normal right away. I cant see the foot good because she has a head tilt and it tilts the same way as the foot so this makes it even harder for her to walk

Aww! My boar had a limp not too long ago... I am pretty sure he jumped from his top level and hurt himself (I've taken his top level out since then!) so I gave him a couple of stinging nettle pills mixed with water in a syringe and he healed up right away! Essence of nettle... I read about it in Peter Gurneys guinea pig book. stuff works good

A limp could be caused by many things, sore foot, sore leg, sore hip and so on. If your piggie has overgrown nails then clipping them will help standing and walking feel more comfortable. You should probably get her checked out by a vet to prevent further pain or injury.

so i took my guinea pig to the pet store to get her nails trimmed and she is still limping and i notice that she has alittle dry blood in her nose and i looked in her ear and it does not look right there is black stuff I am going to call the vet first thing in the morning. I think it might be a inner ear infection and maybe thats what causing the head tilt. The pet store worker said it may be something called wry neck Has anyone head of that I just want my poor guinea pig to get better she has been though so much in the last 4 months since the eye problem and i noticed the my other guinea pig is starting to get a really little head tilt

so i took Bailey to the vet today and it turns out she has a broken bone in her leg and said it most likely wont heal on its own and would need her leg removed but i don't think its a good idea to remove her leg with this really bad head tilt i think she will be suffering so my only option right now is hope it can heal on its own. has anyones guinea pig had a broken leg and its healed on its own is there anything i can do to make it better she is on pain medication right now to help the pain she is in

Remove her leg? I'm not an expert, but that seems kinda drastic to me. Is there an infection or something? I can understand amputating if there was a infectin that could spread, but if not that seems a little much to me. Like I said though, I'm no expert, maybe someone else on here has heard of it or something. Personally, I would keep her on the pain medication for a little bit and see if the leg maybe heals on its own. Does she seem to be in any pain? And if you can (and if it's not too expensive), I would suggest seeing another vet, just for a second opinion. Good luck with everything, I hope your piggy gets better soon! <3

Removing the leg does seem pretty drastic in my opinion. I would get a vets second opinion just to be on the safe side. This poor piggie seems to have a little list of issues. If the leg is indeed broken it would be unfair to keep the guinea pig walking on it with only pain relief.
I have never owned nor known anyone who has a 3 legged pig so im not sure how they would cope. Because of their body shape part of their body would drag which would become painful after time.
Personally if i were in this situation and the leg could not be fixed i would do the kindest thing and put her to sleep. Surgery on guinea pigs can be a hit or miss thing. They dont all take too well to anaesthetic. It would be a long costly, painful possibly unsucessful thing to do and you may loose her after.
Its not the easiest decision to make but from what you have said it may be the fairest thing on your guinea pig.

she is still limping the same i have her in a seprate cage from my other guinea pig and she just sleeps lots which is good then maybe it can heal she does not seem to be in pain but its hard to tell with guinea pig they hide it so well. I have a few questions maybe someone can answer for me one is she has some dry stuff around one of her nostrols its brownish and its stuck to her nose the vet polled it out when we were there and said it was nothing that maybe she just got stuff stuck up it becasue of her head tilt and its always leaning on the floor but i dont think it is it keeps comeing back when i clean it off and my second question is can her broken leg get on infection in it now or later and how could i tell if it is
I am not happy with that vet I go to I feel like they are just riping me off and its all about money to them I am going to try and find another vet here to go to

Guinea pigs can hide pain very well as you have said yourself, the only way you could really tell if she was in pain would be to manipulate the leg itself to see her reaction BUT i would NOT advise doing that, if the vet says its broken in any way then she will be in pain. Sleeping alot isnt the best thing as she wont be eating or drinking. Sleeping will ease the pain as she wont need to move. Nasal discharge thats usually brown in colour is more often than not diluted dried blood from my own experiences. With regards to infections if the wound is open just now and infection will appear if there isnt already one there. Im sorry to be blunt but from the sounds of things she would be far happier and in no pain if she were to be pts.
I would seek another vets opinion just incase your current vet is as you say ripping you off and ask them their honest opinions with regards to her leg healing and her head tilt.
Let us know what you decide to do and what the other vet says.

I have moved her leg and touched it and she does not seem to make any noise or fuss about it she is eating lots of veggies (i think i might be over feeding her) and drinks water and eats dry food (not as much dry food as she use to) so overall i think she is in good spirits she is really missing the other guinea pig though and same with the other one I let them hang togeather for a bit at night time but for now i am just going to let it heal and see how she is in a week after the mediction is done

Thats great that she is eating. Ensure she has plenty of hay to munch on, it may be worth giving her extra hays/grasses. Im glad she seems ok. Its always sad to think of any of our pets in pain. Keep us updated.

Good luck to you and your poor baby! I can't believe a vet suggested amputation -- I'd go to another vet too!

my guinea pig is still limping the same does not seem like its getting better but it would probley take awhile for a bone to heal she does not seem to be in pain and is eating lots so my question is can i put her back in the cage with my other guinea pig (they are missing each other ) or will that maybe make things worse for her leg the vet told me to seperate them but thats maybe to see if she is eating ok and she is for sure I want her to get better but if putting her back together with my other guinea pig will not help the leg heal then i will keep them seperated for now

i would say, put them back together. They love the company, and usually if a piggy is hurt, the other one will protect it.

Have you seen another vet for a second opinion?
If the leg is broken then there is no way the pig is in no pain. And she should not be "left" to heal alone. Is she still on pain medication? If you havent seen another vet i would strongly suggest doing so. As mentioned before guinea pigs hide illness/pain very very well.
You could try and put the pigs back togeather but watch them carefully. And ensure they both continue to eat/drink. If your other pig starts pushing the one with a sore leg about you must seperate them.

If you put them back together make extra sure to keep an eye on them and make sure they're not playing too rough. Sometimes my girls have a blast running around the cage together, but if your piggy has a broken leg then playing hard probably isn't a good idea. Just keep an eye on them.

How is your piggy now?
One of mine had a bad sprain in his shoulder and it took him a good two weeks to stop limping and he was very obviously in pain when the vet manipulated his paw, so it's strange that your piggy isn't reacting that way. Have you managed to find a different vet?

Bailey is doing ok. I talked to another vet and he said he would just see if it will heal on its own He said it may or may not. She is still limping but I don't think she is limping as bad as she was when it happened but its hard to tell. She is off the pain medication and sometimes i will touch her leg very gently and it does not seem like she is in pain she makes no noises or even moves its kind of weird how she is herself condidering she has a broken leg she is eating lots drinking lots eating way more hay now and even runs a bit in her cage I am going to take her back to the vet in a few weeks and get it xrayed again and see if its gotten any better if not then i will decide what i will do then but i don't think i will get her leg amputated but if she seems to be in any pain i will take her to the vet right away she is a tough little piggy

I have a piggy who broke her leg, and she was in pain, she had her leg splinted, and she did two clean breaks, it has taken me 10 weeks to be able to touch her leg to do a nail trim, before she used to bite her feet cause of the pain, if not bite me, hope piggy is ok

Piggies are very resilient, I'm so glad you didn't follow the vet's advice and kept the little leg!
