I really need some help. I have two girl gunieas with pararsites. My two boys died of parasite infection so I really want this sorted. They got the parasites from one of my boys I believe and he died 3 years ago. I have seen vedra at cct and she suggested a number of things that could cause them to be re infesting after we have treated them. with medicine and shampooing. They itch a bit, not lots though, they don't have any skin conditions visable, they have just got a new plastic cage, the have readi grass, and vedra uses this and doesn't have a problem. I wash towels on a high heat and threw out the dustpan I used. We have moved house so I doubt they are on the carpet still. We even tried washin them every three days and one of my guineas was still contaminated. As we sent slides to vedra. I'm just at my wits end. Nina is black and does look like she has White bit at the tips of her coat? Is that related? It appear the day after we washed her? We only no they have them as vedra checked them. Please help. It's been So stressful. Kerry

Its difficult to know which parasites sows may have, Its unlikely they got this from your boars, as you say they passed away three years ago. Are there any open wounds on your guinea pigs? Have you taken them to a vet? If so they should have been able to help treat the parasites.
What shampoo's, spot on treatments are you using?
A couple of pigtures will also help us help you.

They have no open wounds and Vedra from cct wormed them and we bathed them in fleaordie. It's just been an on going problem since my boy past away. Vedra didn't mention what type of parasites they were. She was perplexes how they still had them after worming and bathing. Thanks for your reply. Kerry

They may require a treatment of ivermectin given either topically or orally. This will get rid of any mites. It sounds like they have been treated for worms and fleas but not mites. Typically you need to treat several times over a few months to get rid of the problem 100%.
It may be worth taking them to a vets and asking for ivermectin or sourceing this at your local pet shop. Although they may require the stronger dosage.

Just checked the bottles, I have some as Vedra isn't near me anymore as I moved. They have had ivomec and panacur. How many times in a month should they have it to stop the problem? I haven't had the advice before. Thanks. Kerry

I would suggest removing all loose bedding and giving the cage a very good clean with a strong pet safe disinfectant and cleaning all the hideys, food bowls and toys etc. Keep the guinea pigs on flat newspaper with hay at one end and change the bedding etc daily. Until you find out what is causing this, its the best thing to do. Treat the guinea pigs with ivemectin and panacur. Using the advice given here cutiecavies.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=meds&action=display&thread=6910Keep an eye on the pigs for 2 weeks to see if they improve. If not i would suggest finding an exotics vet and seeking help that way, Parasites can kill piggies if left. Keep us posted with how things go. Kayleigh

Thanks kayleigh. We have been givin the cage etc a thorough clean. But we have now taken them off the wood chips. Will giv them the two drugs and we will also bath them again. The guineas are quite well in themselves so will have to send another sample to Vedra. Will keep u updated. Kez x

If you give the piggies the ivermectin and panacur as a spot on or orally you cannot bath them in a treated shampooo as this may overdose them. If you want to give them a bath then use a normal baby shampoo or pet shampoo that doesnt contain any medication.
Good luck and keep us posted.

We have brought a microscope to help with the problem and we emailed Vedra to see whether she knew what they are. They are chirodiscoides which is a relatively harmless fur mite. But it still causes one of my guineas to be quite run down when she hasn't been bathed for a week or so. We bathed them disinfected everythin and 24hours after this the sample looked quite promisin with lots of dead ones and a few not very active ones. Another 20 hours after that there are little ones and a few mating ones. I'm at my wits end. The only conclusion I can come to is that the readigrass they are on has been contaminated with the mites. So will be orderin some more today. What are ur thoughts? Thanks. Kerry

I would get rid of the readi grass you are using just in case thats the source. Mites of any kind arent nice, Wether they cause the pig to itch or not. It cant be pleasant. Here is a link that explains about the fur mite and how to treat them. Best of luck and i hope your piggies recover fully soon www.guinealynx.info/furmites.htmlKayleigh

Are you able to post pigtures of the worst affected areas on your piggies. Just so we can see the fur/skin damage if any.

Hi. Sorry I haven't replied sooner. There is no skin or fur damage as the are just fur mites not the type that irritate and cause big problems. I hope we are almost there with the problem. Only a few mites found a week after bathing. Have just bathed them again so fingers crossed. Kez

Hi, sorry I have not replied sooner. just to update, My guineas are finally lice free. I got some advice from chrissie who runs gorgeous guineas and I would not hesitate to recommend her or her products. She spoke to me on the phone and through email. I used a product called microneem and then lice and easy shampoo to combat the problem. So yey. We got there. Thanks for ur advice. Kez x
